Report

Irish American Football League teams graduated to playing National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III teams in 2004, showing a marked improvement on their first outings in the 1980s and 1990s against American opposition.

The Tallaght Outlaws created History in 2007, becoming the first Irish Club to play NCAA opposition, losing to Claremont-McKenna Stags of California 67-0. [3]

Over the next three years the Dublin Rebels lost twice to Midwestern All-Star teams – one from Chicago and one representing a Midwestern Conference. [4][16]

In 2012 Trinity College would lose by 50-odd points to the New England Ironmen, while the UL Vikings similarly lost to Wisconsin-Eau Claire. [5][6]

2014 saw Centre College Colonels pay the first of two visits to Ireland, not holding back in a 90-0 defeat of the Dublin Rebels. [7] They would return in 2017 beating the Belfast Trojans 47-0.[11]  The Rebels would also lose heavily in 2018 to Dubuque Spartans from Iowa. [15]

In between these matches the Belfast Trojans would come the closest an Irish team has ever come to beating a US team, losing to the Sewanee Tigers of Kentucky 27-26 [8]. They entertained another American College, Augustana Vikings from Illinois in 2019, losing 65-0.

Dublin Dragons Irish American Football Team 2000-2014

Dublin Dragons Logo

IAFL Senior Team 2000-2014

Home Ground: Lucan Community College

Colours: Burgundy & Gold

History: One of the original teams in the reformed IAFL in 2001, having their roots in the Dublin Gladiators Flag Football Team, the Dragons always struggled in the shadows of their illustrious neighbours, the Dublin Rebels.

They dropped down to the DV8 Development League in 2008 in order to rebuild, returning to full 11-man IAFL in 2010.

In 2013 they were relegated to the new IAFL-1 Conference, where they posted their only winning season in their history, going 6-2. They were promoted to the Shamrock Bowl Conference for 2014, where they went 2-6 in their last season. They wereplagued throughout their history by internal divisions, and in 2015 reformed as the South Dublin Panthers.

Three National Schools in the Midlands entered, which was won in a sudden death playoff by St. Mary’s Edenderry against St. Patrick’s Johnstown Bridge. over 200 pupils and teachers from the three schools were in attendance.[2]. St. Mary’s would be named International Federation of American Football Team of the Month for March 2012 in recognition of the win.[3]

Sudden Death Playoff: St. Mary’s Edenderry 6 St. Patrick’s Johnstown Bridge 0

St. Mary’s completed three passes to get into the endzone on their first possession and held St. Patrick’s on the next possession to win the Tournament, after a long pass into the endzone on fourth down was intercepted by the St. Mary’s defence.[2]

Group Stage

St. Conleith’s Derrinturn 12 St. Mary’s Edenderry 6St. Conleith’s Derrinturn overcame St. Mary’s Edenderry in the opening match by a score of 12-6. St. mary’s scored the first touchdown, which was followed by a long Derrinturn drive which provided the equaliser. Defence appeared to take over after this, and it wasn’t until 15 seconds to go that St. conleith’s scored the winning touchdown, a long pass into the endzone.[2]

St. Mary’s Edenderry 24 St. Patrick’s Johnstown Bridge 12

St. Mary’s opened the scoring in the second game with a 55 yard TD run. The teams then traded touchdowns, first St. Patrick’s equalising, then St. Mary’s taking the lead again. Edenderry then intercepted a Johnstown Bridge pass and returned it for a touchdown to put them two TD’s up. Both teams scored TD’s late in the game to leave the score 24-12 to St. Mary’s.[2]

St. Patrick’s Johnstown Bridge 18 St. Conleith’s Derrinturn 6

St. Patrick’s opened the scoring with a TD run, needing to win to tie the tournament. They then added a second to put themselves 12-0 up. St. Conleith’s, however, weren’t going to let the chance to win the tournament go by, and pulled one back, however St. patrick’s scored late in the game, with just 30 seconds left on the clock to tie the tournament on 1 win apiece. It would come down to points scored and St. Mary’s and St. Patrick’s were both level on 30 points scored, necessitating a sudden death playoff.[2]
