Report

The LSFL Division 1 was won by a different club nearly every year between 1980-81 and 1987-88, with only Bluebell United winning a second time (81-82 & 83-84). Pegasus won the title in 1980-81 and Hammond Lane in 1982-83. St. Mary’s Athlone took the trophy out of Dublin in 1984-85, and Glebe North, TEK United and St. James’s Gate won it the following three years.

The League was re-organised for the 1988-89 season, with Divisions 1 & 1A replaced by the Senior Division and Division 1 respectively.

About

The first Leagues in Europe from 1945 to the mid-1980s were US Armed Forces Personnel playing at Air Force Bases in the United Kingdom, Germany & the Mediterranean.

The USAFE Northern Italian League followed on from the Intercontinental Football League which was a failed attempt at starting a Professional American Football League in Europe following the success of the American film M*A*S*H with its climactic end sequence at an American Football game. The game featured fictional teams of American soldiers playing American Football, and reflected the true life Leagues in Europe and around the World where US Soldiers were stationed. (See Intercontinental Football League 1970-1975 ). Gernimos from Vicenza won the League with a 3-0 record both seasons.

The Northern Italian Football League followed on from the USAFE League in 1976, featuring the Bosco Rocks, Blue Knights & Geronimos, as well as Italian teams made up of local players and soldiers. (See Northern Italian Football League 1976-1986 )

The Italian League which followed was the first National League in Europe featuring homegrown players. (see Federazione Italiana Football Americano 1977 & Lega Italiana Football Americano 1980-1981 )

Report

The first domestic Italian American Football League was the Northern Italian Football League , started in 1976, following the first unsuccessful attempts at introducing Pro American Football to Europe in 1973-1975, with the Intercontinental Football League, which was to feature NFL players, and six teams in Europe, including the Rome Gladiators in Italy.

The Northern Italian Football League was started in 1976, with Vicenza teams Geronimos & Blue Knights dominating play, winning all the Spaghetti Bowls between them and finishing in the top two spots in the Regular Season most years.

The FIFA (Federazione Italiano Football Americano) association was set up the following year, in 1977, with a four-team National Playoff.

In 1980, the second attempt at starting a true National League was founded – the Lega Italiana Football Americano. It lasted one and a half seasons, with the second season finishing at the midway point. Lupi Roma won the first title in 1980 and Gladiatori Roma were the leaders at the halfway point in the second season. The rival Associazone Italiana Football Americano, which played its first season in 1981 took over thereafter.

The Italian League was the first domestic American Football League in Europe, with the game being restricted to US Army men playing at Air Force bases in Europe prior to that. The film M*A*S*H had popularised American Football in Europe in 1970, the first time the game had been seen on screen in Europe in a Major Film. See the Intercontinental Football League 1972-1975: Intercontinental Football League 1970-1975

The FIFA (Federazione Italiano Football Americano) association was set up the following year, in 1977, with a four-team National Playoff.

The Northern Italian Football League was started in 1976, with Vicenza teams Geronimos & Blue Knights dominating play, winning all the Spaghetti Bowls between them and finishing in the top two spots in the Regular Season most years.

The NIFL was merged into the Associazione Italiana Football Americano after the 1986 season.

The Italian League was the first domestic American Football League in Europe, with the game being restricted to US Army men playing at Air Force bases in Europe prior to that. The film M*A*S*H had popularised American Football in Europe in 1970, the first time the game had been seen on screen in Europe in a Major Film.
