Report

The All-Ireland Minor Championships were won by Kilkenny from 1953 to 1955, before Antrim won three finals out of four from 1956 to 1959 (with Dublin breaking the sequence in 1957), Kerry then won the five-in-a-row from 1960 to 1964, before Dublin went on a winning streak from 1965 to 1968.

There were then two years of Kerry victories (1969 to 1970), before Dublin also won two in-in-a-row from 1971 to 1972, Cork took the 1973 title.

About

The Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland (now Basketball Ireland) was the organisation in charge of running Basketball in Ireland from 1947 to 1979 when it changed its name to the Irish Basketball Association.

From 1953 to 1973 it was organised on a Club and County basis like the Gaelic Athletic association, and the All-Ireland Minor Championship was the Underage County Championship.

The Minor Championships were replaced by the Under 19 and Under 17 Championships in 1974 (still on a County basis unlike the Senior Championship which appears to have been replaced by a National League based on clubs, and the National Intermediate Area Competition)

Report

Louis Meteors won their record seventh All-Ireland Blitz Title since 1968 in the Final edition of the competition in 1978 [Reference: 8]. Other winners of the All-Ireland Blitz were Corinthians (also from Dublin) in 1972 and 1975, St. Vincent’s (1971) and Marathon, another Dublin team, in 1974.

About

The Ladies All-Ireland Championship was the Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland’s Annual Blitz to determine the Irish Club Champions. In 1978 the Blitz was replaced by a National League in line with the Men’s which had also replaced the All-Ireland Championship in 1973. (see https://eirball.ie/2018/12/19/ibba-ladies-national-basketball-league-1980-1991/ for the Ladies National Basketball League 1980-1991).

The Amateur Basketball Association of Ireland was organised very like the Gaelic Athletic Association prior to 1973, with All-Ireland County & Club Championships, and after the introduction of the National Leagues based on clubs, was renamed the Irish Basketball Association in 1980.

About

The International League of American Football was a proposed Professional American Football League with teams representing eight cities or countries in Europe, and featuring European Players. Head Coaches with NCAA experience had been brought in, and Villa Park in Birmingham, home of Aston Villa, and one of the premier grounds in English Soccer, had been secured for the Birmingham team, but the league never got off the ground, and folded before the first kickoff on 14 April 1990, even though schedules had been released in November prior to that, with each team playing a 12-game season.

About the AFL

The Arena Football League was the original Indoor or Arena American Football League, established in 1986. After the court ruling in 1998 that its patent (awarded in 1989) only referred to the rebound nets either side of the goalposts, everything else was football, and not under copyright, as it was already in the common sphere.

This opened the door to rival Indoor Leagues, and in an attempt to see them off Arena Football League created Arena Football 2, an official Minor League. This was an over-expansion and coupled with the debts from the court case related to the patent, it incurred a legacy debt that left the League in no position to continue after 2019.

About Arena / Indoor Football

Indoor Football, also known as Arena Football was developed in 1986 as an 8v8 form of Indoor American Football. After an initial few seasons where the game was developed with a 4 team league, a full seasons League with eventually over a dozen teams was developed in the 1990 which was considered by the Wall Street Journal to be a fifth major.

The Arena Football League over-expanded in the 2000s with a Minor League, and its importance (and number of teams) waned since it first experienced financial diffulties  in 2009, and it ceased operations after the 2019 season due to the legacy debt incurred.

There is now, however, Indoor Football Leagues all over America, all of which would now be considered Minor League or Semi-Pro (AAA, AA, or even A)

Indoor Football is played on a 50-yard field with two 8-yard endzones, and teams have 5 downs (attempts) to reach the endzone or the ball is turned over. 3 of those downs must be passing plays, making Indoor Football highly explosive and high scoring.

The main difference between Arena Football & Indoor Football is the rebound nets either side of the goalposts in Arena Football, which is the only part of the original patent given to the Arena Football League in 1989, that a subsequent ruling in 1998 ruled was copyright, the rest being Football already in other leagues.

Report

After cancelling the 2009 season in order to restructure, following the debts incurred by the failed court case brought against the Indoor Professional Football League over copyright infringement in 1998, and over-expansion with its official minor league – arenafootball2 – from 2000-2010, the Arena Football League re-launched in 2010, with Spokane Shock winning the Arena Bowl, followed by Jacksonville Sharks in 2011 and Arizona Rattlers three-in-a-row from 2012 to 2014, and then San Jose Sabercats in 2015.

The league then underwent a significant drop in teams, from 12 in 2015 to 8 in 2016 and 5 in 2017 (see: https://eirball.ie/2020/02/19/arena-football-league-2016-2019/ )

About

Supreme Indoor Football was an Indoor American Football League, based primarily in the Carolinas, in the American South. It played one season. It could be considered a follow-on from the X-League Indoor Football (see: https://eirball.ie/2020/02/17/x-league-indoor-football-2014-2015/ ) and was replaced by the American Arena League. Cape Fear Heroes (Fayetteville, NC) were in all three leagues.

About Indoor Football
