Report

Following WWII the Canadian Rugby Union was down to 3 divisions from 6 prior to the War. The Western Interprovincial Union had merged from 3 divisions into one, and the Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union had ceased to play for the Grey Cup. The Grey Cup Champions between 1946 and 1955 were Toronto Argonauts (1946 and 1947), Calgary Stampeders (1948), Montreal Alouettes (1949), Toronto Argonauts (1950), Ottawa Rough Riders (1951) , Toronto Argonauts (1952), Hamilton Tiger-Cats (1953), Edmonton Eskimoes (1954 and 1955).

The Ontario Rugby Football Union had resigned from Senior Football after 1949, and the Hamilton Tigers and Hamilton Wildcats merged as Hamilton Tiger-Cats. In 1954 the Canadian Rugby Union had added the British Columbia Lions in Vancouver on the West Coast to Senior Football for the first time, thus laying the foundations of the original nine which formed the Canadian Football Council in 1956 after it broke zaway from the Canadian Rugby Union and started Professional Football in Canada. In 1956 the CFC renamed itself the Canadian Football League.

Report

For the duration of WWI the Canadian Rugby Union (Canadian Football) experieced a sharp drop in players able to play Football in Canada. From 1916 to 1919 the Grey Cup was not played at all. In 1916 the only Football played was in the Ontario Rugby Football Union, with the teams renamed after Battalions (Ottawa 207th Battalion won) and a two game series in the Saskatchewan RFU, where Regina Rugby Club won. In 1917 there was only the Ottawa Patriotic League won by Ottawa Rough Riders in a three-game series, and the Winnipeg Patriotic Senior League won by Winnipeg Arenas in a four-game series with only four teams playing in total in Canada Senior Football. In 1918 there was nothing. In 1919, however, the full league returned after the war ended although there were only playoffs in the Western Canada Rugby Football Union, with Regina Rugby Club winning 13-1 in the Grey Cup against Calgary Canucks. The Grey Cup returned in 1920.

Report

The Canadian Rugby Union (Canadian Football) entered a new era with the establishment of the Interprovincial Rugby Football Union in 1907 comprising Toronto Argonauts, Montréal Amateur Athletic Association, Hamilton Tigers and Ottawa Rough Riders, who are all still members of the Canadian Football League in some form or other. That year Montréal Amateur Athletic Association defeated Petrborough for the Canadian Rugby Union Senior Championship 75-10. Western Divisions, of which there was only Manitoba RFU in the CRU did not compete for the Senior Championship.

In 1908 Alberta Rugby Football Union joined the CRU and Hamilton Tigers won the Senior Championship 21-17 against Toronto Argonauts. 1909 brought more significant change with the first Grey Cup competed for after the awarding of the trophy by Earl Grey. University of Toronto defeated Toronto Parkdale Canoe Club 26-6. UT again won in 1910 defeating Hamilton 16-7 and again in 1911, 14-7 over Toronto Argonauts. Hamilton Alerts ended this run in 1912 with an 11-4 victory over Toronto Argonauts. Hamilton Tigers kept the Grey Cup in Hamilton in 1913 with a 44-2 defeat of Toronto Parkdale Canoe Club. In 1914 Ottawa St. Patrick’s College joined the Ontario RFU, posting a 1-3 record. Saskathcewan Rugby Football Union also joined the CRU that year and Toronto Argonauts won their first Grey Cup with a 14-2 defeat of the University of Toronto. In 1915 Football was much scaled back due to WWI and the Hamilton Tigers won the Grey Cup with a win over Toronto Rowing & Athletic Association (13-7). There wasno Grey Cup in 1916.

Report

An element of stability entered the Quebec Rugby Football Union (Canadian Football) season in 1891 with the adoption of a two-game league season for the three teams with the Playoff Final contested between Montréal AAA and McGill University with Montréal AAA. The following season both the QRFU and ORFU (Ontario Rugby Football Union) played league seasons with a balanced schedule and playoffs as well asa Canadian Rugby Union playoff to decid the National Champions which Manitoba Rugby Football Union entered after a couple of seasons.
