Report

The ECHL is a AA American Ice Hockey League, equivalent to Division 3 in English Football terms (Modern Day League 1). It is aligned with the NHL (National Hockey League) the Premier League of Ice Hockey in North America which has Head Offices in both Toronto and New York as well as teams throughout Canada and USA. Kalamazoo Wings of the International Hockey League joined the ECHL (an orphaned acronym meaning East Coast Hockey League) in 2009-10. The team is famous for being the first to dye their home ice green for a match on St. Patrick’s Day – a tradition started on March 17th 1982 by Boston Irish-American Steve Doherty, the teams Public Relations Officer. It is as tradition which they still maintain to this day.

A fifth Division – the North Division – was required within the ECHL for this expansion – and the Wings won it the first three years of their history in the ECHL. After slipping to second place in the division in 2012-13 they won the North Division title again in 2013-14. Kalamazoo Wings lost in the Eastern Conference Quarter-Finals 3 games to 2 to Reading Royals in 2009-10; In 2010-11 they made it all the way to the Kelly Cup (another Irish Connection) but lost to Western Conference Champions Alaska Aces 4 games to 1. They made it to the Eastern Conference Finals the following year losing 4-1 to Florida Everblades, and in 2013-14 after a year absent from the playoffs they lost in the Eastern Conference Quartet-Finals 4 games to 2 to Greenville Road Warriors.

For the 2014-15 season the Central Hockey League, based primarily in Texas and the Prairie States merged with the ECHL creating a sixth division. ECHL once stood for East Coast Hockey League but merged with numerous other regional AA leagues until it became a National League, thus dropping the East Coast Hockey League name and just going by the orphaned acronym ECHL. The Kelly Cup is named after Patrick J. Kelly, one of the founding fathers of the ECHL, who retired in 1996. Prior to 1997 when the Cup was named after him the Riley Cup was awarded to the ECHL Champions.

The Wings were not only the first to dye the Ice green, but also the first to dye the ice pink in aid of breast cancer. About Basketball Ireland / Irish Basketball Association Cups

The Irish Basketball Association ran the National Cup for the Top Two Divisions as well as any regional teams that wished to enter in both Men’s and Women’s as well as Junior (Under 19) Cup for both Men and Women as well as a Junior B (U19) Regional Cup for both Men and Women. The Cups were Knockout (single elimination) from the First Round. They were replaced by Super League and Division 1 Cups when the Association rebranded as Basketball Ireland in 2003. Report

Tolka Rovers won their first ever Irish Basketball Association Women’s Senior National Sprite Cup when defeating the heavily fancied Avonmore Snowcream Wildcats in their rookie Final. The Wildcats with only loss all season battled all the way against Tolka but a game high 15 points from MVP Rachel Kelly and 14 from Eimear Howard were just enough for the Northside Dubliners to beat the Waterford women. In an unpredictable finish, given both season form and the Wildcats being 13 points in front after a few minutes of the second half starting, Tolka managed to not only pull back the score but go ahead with a second Lorraine O’Brien three-pointer, and then pulled into a seven-point lead with three minutes remaining thanks to the excellent play of Sharon Kelly inside and another ‘three’ from Roisin Dixon. Wildcats managed to claw the score back to 58-59 with 23 seconds left after the brilliant Michelle Maguire but she missed the bonus and the game and the Cup went to Tolka Rovers for the first time ever.

Report

Denny Notre Dame wrote themselves into the Irish Basketball Association history books by becoming the first team to ever win the Men’s National (Sprite) Cup three times in a row. The local favourites defeated Esat Telecom Blue Demons 62-61 in the Final at the National Basketball Arena in Tallaght, South Dublin with 19 points from Americans Anthony Jenkins, 14 from Calvin Morris and 13 from Lennie McMillan. Despite a huge 34 point haul from game MVP American Dion Wingfield and big three-pointers from Duvall Simmonds and Spanish Bosman-ruling player Paco de Benito, the Blue Demons, who had led 40-34 at the half were unable to resist the Notre Dame challenge after their other American Simmonds went on four fouls after seven minutes of the restart and spent six minutes on the bench allowing the Tallaght side to go six points clear. With Simmonds back in with seven minutes remaining and the help of three free throws from de Benito the Corkmen managed to pull the score back to two points, but a crucial three-pointer from Jenkins and four missed free throws from Blue Demons sealed the three-in-a-row for Denny Notre Dame.
