Report

The 2020 American Football Ireland Season was cancelled on 4 April 2020, a couple of weeks after a revised, shortened season schedule of 6 matches per team was brought in due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic. [Ref: 9]

The AFI board made the decision to cancel the season in its entirety due to two main reasons: The uncertainty around when the pandemic would end, making it unlikely a schedule will be published in time for the teams to prepare for the season, and also the probablity of the unavailability of ambulance cover at matches.

The AFI board did, however, state the possibility of running a 2 to 3 week invitational tournament at the end of summer for clubs that wish to take part, making the possibilty of some form of kitted football possible in 2020. [Ref: 10]
