About the WWCFL 2022 Season

The 2022 Western Women’s Canadian Football League (WWCFL) season was the 10th season of the league, having been founded in 2011 (2020 and 2021 seasons were cancelled due to COVID-19). The Gridiron Football League for Women is based in the Western Canada Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta. The Prairie Conference for 2022 consisted of Regina Riot and Saskatoon Valkyries from Saskatchewan and Winnipeg Wolfpack and Manitoba Fearless (Winnipeg) from Manitoba. The Western Conference consisted of the Alberta teams Calgary Rage, Edmonton Storm and Lethbridge Steel. Northern Anarchy (Western Conference) were the only team to not return after the enforced COVID-19 shutdown of the league. The two Conferences each played a four-game regular season entirely within their own Conference before the playoffs. The Playoffs were Crossover between Conferences from the Semi-Finals (Final four). A Ouellette (Two Rushing Touchdowns) and B Bede (Three Field Goals, Two Convert Kicks and One Rouge (Single) were the heroes for Toronto Argonauts scoring 12 points each, and accounting for all the Argos points between them as Toronto ended Winnipeg Blue Bombers dreams of a dynasty with a close 24-23 victory in Regina, Saskatchewan.

The reigning Grey Cup holders Winnipeg were hoping for a three-peat but went down to A Ouellette’s five yard touchdown run and B Bede’s successful convert kick with less than four minutes remaining. The Blue Bombers had scored through two touchdowns from Quarterback D Prukop and a 102-yard punt return for Touchdown by J Grant, the longest in Grey Cup history as well as a Field Goal and two successful Convert Kicks by M Liegghio, however it was not to be as the Double Blues of Toronto took home the 109th Grey Cup.
