Visiting US and Canadian Baseball Teams

In 1874, Major League Baseball teams visited Ireland for the earliest recorded Baseball match in Ireland, and, naturally enough, given the links between the countries, Ireland, along with France and Britain got the biggest promotion of Baseball when teams toured Europe during the era leading up to the First World War.

Fastpitch Softball

Fastpitch Softball is basically a Women’s Competitive version of Baseball, and differs from the Coed / Mixed version of Softball played in Ireland since the 1980s, as the pitching is fast and not in a soft arc, as in the recreational version of the sport (hence the name softball). There are 10 players in a Softball team, as opposed to 9 in Baseball.

The Fastpitch Ireland programme dates from the early 200os, when two Women’s teams were created, and then in the 2010s, the Softball Ireland National team (who played in both the World Championships and European Championships) was started.

In 2019-20 the first Softball Ireland Irish National Fastpitch League began, playing all its matches on the turf pitch at the National Indoor Arena in Blanchardstown, Dublin 15. Unlike the earlier Fastpitch Softball in Ireland, this is Coed / Mixed, with an equal representation of Men to Women (5:5).

Leinster Softball

Leinster Softball League

Below you will find links to the results and tables of the Leinster Softball League from 1982 to present – arranged by Division, with Champions Lists; Decade Overviews (Final Tables only); and Season-by-Season Results Sections.

The Leinster Softball League is a Coed Slowpitch Softball League in Leinster Province, Ireland. It is currently at a 5:5 Male:Female Ratio although in its early days it was 9:1 Male:Female. There was a Female Slowpitch League from 1997-2002 which was League for Competitive Females from the top Divisions in the Leinster Softball League.

The League started in 1982 as the Dublin Softball League with 5 teams – teams from the US Embassy Marines,  Japanese Embassy Skinny Rats, the Fat Cats (American Businessmen), the Misfits (American Students, Irish Computer Workers and American Businessmen), and one from the Druid’s Chair, Killiney.

In 1990 the first Irish Softball Association was formed, which in 1992 became the Irish Baseball & Softball Association, adding a Second Division. A third Division was added in 1994, and a Fourth in 1996. In 1997 the Female Slowpitch League for Competitive Females was added. In 1998 the IBSA was renamed the Irish Baseball & Softball Federation.

In 2000 a split occurred between the Baseball & Softball Federations, and The Irish Softball Association took over the running of Softball in Ireland. A fifth Coed Division was added that year and in 2001 a Seventh Level, the Men’s Non-Competitive League was added. 2002 was the last year of the Women’s Slowpitch League.

In 2004 the Irish Softball Association was rebranded Softball Ireland, and the number of divisions dropped to four, which were run directly by Softball Ireland.(Softball Ireland 2004-Present)Softball Leinster was reformed in 2011 for the purposes of running the League from 2012 onwards, with the League dropping to three levels.(Softball Leinster 2011-Present)

The most successful clubs over the entire history of the League have been Dodder Dynamoes (the oldest Softball team in Ireland) and Marlay Martyrs (both based in South Dublin suburbs – Marlay in Marlay Park, Rathfarnham (D14) and Dodder Dynamoes originally from Dodder Park, Dartry and now nomadic.

The League is Coed, originally 8:2 Ratio of Men:Women, until it levelled to 5:5 twice – in the late-1990s and in 2017.

This is a look at the Champions of each of the Levels of the Leinster Softball League with the winning record (W-L-Pts) for each year of the League Champions.

Softball Business League

Businesses and Corporations have been involved in Irish Softball since the first Leagues in the 1980s, with teams such as Fat Cats made up of american Businessmen. In the 1990s, Computer Companies got involved in a big way, and since the 2000s, there has been a separate Business House League or Corporate League in the Area. (see the Leinster Softball page on Eirball for more on the Leagues in the 1980s and 1990s: https://eirball.ie/leinster-softball/

The Business House League was run directly by Softball Ireland in the 2000s, and then, the Corporate League as it was now known, was run by Softball Leinster in the 2010s.

About Baseball and Softball

Baseball & Softball are two related American Sports, where teams take turns batting & fielding much like in Cricket, with the difference that in Baseball & Softball the objective is to get around four bases back home to score a run. the team with the most runs is the winner.

Games usually last 9 Innings (Baseball) or 7 Innings (Softball), and employ the “3-strikes and you’re out” rule whereby a batter has three chances to hit the ball pitched at him before he is declared out – h or she may also be caught out. A runner may also be “tagged” out by being touched with the ball in hand by a fielder or when the ball is thrown to base before the runner reaches it. An Innings isn’t over until 3 players are out.

There are variations on this whereby an Innings is timed (such as in Blitzes or Indoor Softball)

Little League is Children’s Baseball and usually features 4 Innings and modified rules.

All Competitions in Ireland are Mixed. The International Teams may be Men’s, Women’s or Mixed.

Baseball Ireland Brief History

Baseball has been played in Ireland since the first visiting Major League Baseball teams in the late 19th Century, which had Irish-born players on their rosters. During WWI and WWII, American Navy, Air Force and Army teams played matches in Cork and Northern Ireland in aid of Charity, with the Air Corps and Army having their own leagues in Northern Ireland in the 1940s. (see https://eirball.ie/international-baseball/ for more details)

From the 1960s to the 1980s the first Youth Baseball Leagues appeared in Dublin, Waterford and Donegal. (see https://eirball.ie/little-league/ for more details)

The first Adult Baseball League in Ireland, with Irish players started in 1997, after the O’Malley Baseball and Little League Fields in Clondalkin, Co. Dublin (named after the Irish-American Owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who donated $100,000 of his own money towards the building of the fields). (see https://eirball.ie/baseball-ireland/ )

The Irish National Baseball Team started at this time also, competing in the European championships, as well as hosting an Irish Tournament in Ashbourne, Co. Meath and playing in tours of North America approximately once every four years. (see https://eirball.ie/international-baseball/ for more details on Irish Club and National teams in World and European Championships and other tournaments)

In 1982 the first Softball League was organised in Dublin, featuring teams of US and Japanese Embassy Staff and Businessmen, as well as an Irish team based in the Druids Chair, Killiney. The Leinster Softball Association (now Softball Leinster) has been running Leagues in the Greater Dublin area since 1990, a follow on from the Dublin Softball League. (see https://eirball.ie/leinster-softball/ for more on Leinster Softball Leagues and Cups)

In 2008 the first Ulster Softball League season was started, and there was briefly (2010-2012) a Munster Softball League. (See https://eirball.ie/ulster-softball/ , https://eirball.ie/munster-softball/ and https://eirball.ie/connacht-softball/ for more on Provincial Softball outside Leinster)

The first Irish Baseball and Softball Association was formed in 1989, and Blitzes have been played in places such as Limerick (1986-1988), Galway (1990s), Cork and Longford, as well as Dublin and Belfast. The Softball Ireland National Club Championship is between the winners of the Provincial Leagues, and qualifies teams to play in the European Club Championships. (see https://eirball.ie/softball-ireland/ for more details on the SINCC and other Softball Ireland tournaments)

There is also a Women’s Fastpitch Softball National Team, and a Coed and Men’s Slowpitch Softball National Team, which compete in the European Championships. The Women’s Fastpitch team also competes in the World Championships, as does the U19 Women’s National Fastpitch team. The first Fastpitch Softball League in Ireland started in 2019 (see https://eirball.ie/fastpitch-softball/ for more details on Fastpitch Softball and https://eirball.ie/international-softball/ for more details on International Softball )

There are also Little League (Children’s Baseball), Colleges, a Softball Business League and Indoor Softball Leagues and Tournaments in Ireland, as well as numerous blitzes. (See https://eirball.ie/indoor-softball/ , https://eirball.ie/little-league/ , https://eirball.ie/intervarsity-softball/ ,https://eirball.ie/softball-business-league/ , https://eirball.ie/indoor-softball/ , https://eirball.ie/softball-blitzes/

Irish Players have been playing Professional Baseball since the very first Professional Baseball team in Cincinnati in 1869. For more on Irish Players and Teams see : https://eirball.ie/irish-baseball-teams-players-records/ and for Softball teams see: https://eirball.ie/softball-teams/. For a record of World Baseball, including US Major and Minor Leagues with Irish players see: https://eirball.ie/world-baseball-softball/

Differences between Baseball & Softball

There are Nine Players on a Baseball Team and 10 on a Softball Team (there is an extra player in the outfield in Softball)
