About the CAAFA

The Central Asian American Football Association was set up in 2002 by the intrepid American with the Irish name, Tom Kelly. Having previously tried to promote American Football in the USSR in 1979, he had more success in 2002 starting teams at the American University of Khyrgyzstan (AUK) and KIMEP in Kazakhstan, two neighbouring Central Asian Republics.

Following a couple of Flag American Football games between the two teams and a few games versus Inter (International) and World teams featuring players from Turkey, Italy, Russia, USA, Canada, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan and also a game against the US Embassy in Kyrgyzstan, Tom Kelly managed to get some equipment in from America to set up two teams: Barsy Leopards, based in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and Almaty KIMEP Titans in Kazakhstan.

After four years (2005 to 2008) playing a series of games versus each other every Spring and Autumn, there emerged a third team: Bishkek Golden Eagles. With the addition of a third team in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan National University (KNU) in Autumn 2008, a three-team tournament was organised in Bishkek, between the Leopards, Golden Eagles and KNU. Played over Labour Weekend, KNU won the inaugural Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan) Tournament, with Bishkek Barsy Leopards second and Bishkek Golden Eagles third.
