In the opening week of the 2021 Shinty Mowi Senior League B Kingussie got off to a winning start with a 2-1 win over Lovat, and arch rivals for the Championship over the last two decades Newtonmore similarly won by a single goal at Beauly. Meanwhile Caberfeidh had a 6-2 victory against Strathglass to top the table on Goal Difference.

Week 2 action on the 12th June saw Lovat defeat Beauly 3-2 to get their first points of the season with Beauly still waiting for theirs, as Newtronmore and Kingussie had big wins against Strathglass (5-2) and Caberfeidh (13-0) respectively to stay 100%.

In Week 3, on the 19th June Beauly got their first win and points of the season with a 5-3 victory at Strathglass in a high-scoring encounter.

The 26th June saw a number of COVID virus pandemic cancellations and the 3rd and 10th of July were MacTavish and Macauley Cup Weeks.

League action was back on the 24th July with wins for Kingussie and Newtonmore, Struan Ross scoring a hat-trick for the latter in their 4-3 win at Caberfeidh. Caberfeidh were to lose 3-4 at home for the second week running on July 30 as the lost to Beauly. Caberfeidh’s high-scoring and leaky defense record continued in Week 8 as they won 8-3 versus Strtahglass, Kevin Bartlett scoring 5 goals, the difference between the two sides.

After a years break due to concerns around the COVID-19 Coronavirus pandemic, the Shinty Leagues are back in Scotland with the Premiership and National League condensed into three senior leagues of 6 teams each playing a 10 game schedule (double round-robin – home and away). There is no difference in playing level between the Senior A, Senior B and Senior C Leagues. The Senior B League for 2021 includes 2018 Champions Newtonmore and 2019 Champions Kingussie.

Shinty is Gaelic Scotland’s traditional version of Hurling. It is one of the forgotten Gaelic, Celtic or Atlantic Games like Basque Pelota and Welsh Baseball, played mostly in Gaelic parts of Scotland like the Highlands and Islands.

The game is very similar to Hurling, with a curved stick used to hit a ball through a goal, except there is no point-over-the-bar and less play in the air. The game is 12-a-side as opposed to Hurling’s 15-a-side. It is also known as Camanachd in Scottish Gaelic.
