Home Ground: Lucan Community College

Colours: Burgundy & Gold

History: One of the original teams in the reformed IAFL in 2001, having their roots in the Dublin Gladiators Flag Football Team, the Dragons always struggled in the shadows of their illustrious neighbours, the Dublin Rebels.

They dropped down to the 8-a-side Division 1 in 2002-03 and again the DV8 Development League in 2008 in order to rebuild, returning to full 11-man IAFL in 2004 & 2010.

They were plagued throughout their history by internal divisions, and in 2015 reformed as the South Dublin Panthers.

The first American Football game played in Ireland between two Irish sides was in Omagh, Co. Tyrone on 12 May 1985, between the Tyrone Tornadoes and Coleraine Chieftains. It was played under 9-Man National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules, but was unkitted. [1][2]

There was a Northern Ireland American Football Association at this time, with plans for a league involving the two teams, and the Ballymena Wolfhounds and Belfast Blitzers. [2]

There was a Junior League for 8-14 year-olds, probably two-touch in the Leinster Area in 1987 featuring teams from Coolock-Darndale (St. Brendan’s Youth Club) as well as Sutton, Bray Seahawks (Wicklow) and a team from Co. Offaly. A picture of one player, ‘ET’ Roche (Gulls) appeared in the Sunday Tribune in 1987.

Report

The Dublin Tornadoes and Labatt (Belfast) Spartans both defeted newcomers Antrim Bulldogs in Festival matches in 1988. the Festivals could have been a way for the Irish American Football League teams to try out new players and for the newer teams such as Antrim Bulldogs in 1988 to gain experience before joining the League proper.

Report

Drogheda Lightning won the Dv8 Development League with 9 Points. Both the Lightning and Trim Bulldogs played a full schedule while the 2nds teams played a half- or three-quarter- schedule. The Lightning won both games against both Trim Bulldogs & Dublin Dragons 2nds, but lost matches against the three 2nds teams from Ulster.

Team Changes from 2011

The Tullamore Phoenix made the step up the the full 11-a-side IAFL to be replaced by their 2nds team. The Belfast Trojans 2nds team were a new entry.

About

The DV8 Development League was an 8-a-side fully kitted league and was set up in 2008 with two main aims: (1) To give teams in the Irish Regions a chance to play Competitive Football while building up their kit & player numbers and (2) to enable 2nds teams of bigger IAFL teams in the main league to field 2nds teams.
