Week 1 Recap

Craigavon Cowboys, Belfast Trojans and Edenderry Eagles all got off to a perfect start in the American Football Ireland Flag Premier Division 2021 with the Cowboys winning against both North Leinster teams the Louth Mavericks (24-8) and Maynooth University Hurricanes (a closer match at 40-38). The Trojans squeaked by the Belfast Knights 27-26 in their first game before defeating the Mavericks 24-18 and the Edenderry Eagles continued their winning ways with a 28-6 win versus Trinity College Dublin and a huge 46-12 win against the Cork City Outlaws. The Eagles also picked up two forfeit wins over the University College Cork Raiders who failed to start the season. The other four South Conference teams the Dublin Bay Raptors, Trinity College Dublin, and Cork City Outlaws also picked up two forfeit wins. Trinity picked up a close 36-28 win versus the Raptors who defeated the Outlaws 52-38 in a game preplayed from Week 2 due to the Raiders forfeiting (the game gave both teams two games for their journey). In the other game the Hurricanes won 35-24 against the Knights.

About Flag Football and the AFI Flag Premier Division

Flag Football is a non-contact version of American Football that is very like Tag Rugby whereby players have flags attached to a belt around their waist which must be pulled off in order to tackle the ball carrier. It is Coed (Mixed – both men and women, boys and girls can play on the same teams) and played on a smaller field than the 11v11 full-contact pads and helmets version of the sport.

The American Football Ireland Flag Premier Division is the top level of Flag Football in Ireland.

Report

The Dublin Celts were formed in December 1984, becoming the first ever Irish American Football Team. By March there were teams in Coleraine, Co. Derry and Blanchardstown, UCD and Foxrock in Dublin, and by the summer teams had also sprung up in Drimnagh and Marlay Park, both also Dublin.

These teams were to form part of an unofficial ad-hoc Flag Football League in the Dublin Area – with the exception of Coleraine, who joined up with Tyrone Tornadoes, Belfast Blitzers, Craigavon Cowboys, Ballymena Wolfhounds and Bangor Buccaneers in forming the NIAFA – Northern Ireland American Football Association.

The Dublin teams formed their own IAFA – Irish American Football Association – under Aiden Prendergast and the two Associations, along with the IAFRA – Irish American Football Referees Association – were to join forces in January 1986.

Report

The Maynooth University Flag Football team has existed since 2010 when it was known as NUI Maynooth Phantoms. The highlight of the year for the first four years was the annual Tournament they hosted in the Maynooth University College grounds. In 2012-13 season, they had their greatest achievement, beating the Mullingar Minotaurs in the Turkey Bowl hosted by Dublin 86ers, and they also won a tournament at the end of the 2010-11 season, beating Dublin 86ers in the Final.

They entered the first Emerald Bowl Conference season in 2014-15, where they have had less luck, finishing with a 50% record twice, and a losing record twice. In 2019 the dropped dowm to the Glas Bowl Conference, where they reached the Final, losing to Craigavon Cowboys 2nds. It was their first winning season since the start of the Irish Flag Football League in 2014.

They were known as the NUI Maynooth Phantoms from 2010-2015, and the Maynooth University Bulls from 2015 to 2016, and since then as Maynooth University Hurricanes. The annual Maynooth Tournament, held from 2011 to 2014 was re-established in 2020, when it became an International Charity Tournament. It was also held as part of the Charity Tournament season in 2017-18.
