Note: The above Table is a composite table, adding the records of each of the teams for the five tournaments. Pct = Winning Percentage over entire season. Teams are Ranked by 1. Number of Wins. 2. Winning Percentage. 3. Number of Losses.

The 2017-18 Flag Football Ireland Season was intended as a break from the League in order to grow the game – it seems to have worked – from 7 teams in the League in 2017 – there were 19 in 2018, and in 2019 there were 25 teams. Westmeath Minotaurs won three of the Bowl Games, including the last one, the Simon Bowl in Dundalk, triumphing 20-13 over Dublin Bay Raptors.

The Tournaments featured a European Team from a US Air Force Base in Germany – Kaiserslautern Screamin’ Eagles – making it an International Tournament like the Celtic Bowl of 2015. I was also Co-ed – men & women could both play.

Westmeath Minotaurs won the second Flag football tournament of the season in Maynooth, winning both group games and then defeating UCD in the final. After the group stage where each team played twice there was a straight final due to the fading light as the tournament was behind schedule. This left both the Dubliin Bay Raptors and South Dublin Panthers bitterly disappointed as they would be knocked out on points difference despite winning both of their group games like UCD and the Minotaurs.

The Final went into overtime with Westmeath emerging winners with a Niall King touchdown catch. Jack Lynch proved the standout on the day catching 7 TD passes as well as returning an interception for a touchdown.

Westmeath Minotaurs won their second straight Flag Bowl Tournament with a 20-13 victory over the Dublin Bay Raptors in the Final. Held in aid of the Simon Communities Charity for the Homeless, the Minotaurs won all five games, racking up 91 points in three group games behind QB Dermot Corroon
with Jack Lynch and Jason Owens on Offense and Chris Gilbert and David Walsh on Defense also having outstanding days.

The Dublin Bay Raptors won the other group in fine style also, winning all three games, and making sure to rack up the points also after the disappointment of the Maynooth Tournament, winning all three of their games like the Minotaurs.

After despatching the Panthers and Cowboys in the Semi-Finals, the Raptors and Minotaurs would meet undefeated in the Final, in what was a tense game. The Minotaurs would win their second Bowl in a row 20-13 after MVP Conor McGroarty of the Raptors was stopped yards from the line as time ran out.

Report

The Maynooth University Flag Football team has existed since 2010 when it was known as NUI Maynooth Phantoms. The highlight of the year for the first four years was the annual Tournament they hosted in the Maynooth University College grounds. In 2012-13 season, they had their greatest achievement, beating the Mullingar Minotaurs in the Turkey Bowl hosted by Dublin 86ers, and they also won a tournament at the end of the 2010-11 season, beating Dublin 86ers in the Final.

They entered the first Emerald Bowl Conference season in 2014-15, where they have had less luck, finishing with a 50% record twice, and a losing record twice. In 2019 the dropped dowm to the Glas Bowl Conference, where they reached the Final, losing to Craigavon Cowboys 2nds. It was their first winning season since the start of the Irish Flag Football League in 2014.

They were known as the NUI Maynooth Phantoms from 2010-2015, and the Maynooth University Bulls from 2015 to 2016, and since then as Maynooth University Hurricanes. The annual Maynooth Tournament, held from 2011 to 2014 was re-established in 2020, when it became an International Charity Tournament. It was also held as part of the Charity Tournament season in 2017-18.

Match Reports and Box Scores

29 April 2001

Drimnagh Cycos 20 UL Vikings 24 – Played in Fairview Park, Dublin. This was the first match in over a year for both teams since the Irish Flag Football League folded in 2000. The match was used as match practice by the Cycos before their match against English Champions Leicester Europa Eagles. The Vikings defence was on top in the first half as they ran out to an 18-6 lead early on. The Cycos responed with a 30-yard scoring run by Stephen Dunne, but the Vikings again went two TD’s up to lead 24-13 at the half. The Cycos managed to keep the Vikings out of the endzone in the second half, but the Vikings managed to hold on for the win, as Drimnagh could only manage one TD, a 5-yard run by Liam Farrell, to leave the score 24-20 to UL at the finish. Drimnagh Cycos 49 Leicester Europa Eagles 6Played in Sallins, Co. Kildare. In warm non-sunny conditions, Leicester started four-and-out as the Cycos defence established themselves early on. QB Aidan Kelly topped off a long-drive on Drimnagh’s first possession with a long, winding run. Kelly found WR Liam Farrell for the one-point conversion. Although suffering a knee-injury on the play, Farrell recovered. The eagles levelled the scores with their second drive, QB Chris Wild finding Chris Broughton in the endzone. The conversion was unsuccessful, and the Cycos mainained the lead. QB Kelly found WR Farrel with two touchdown passes on the next two Cycos drives, with Kelly intercepting the Eagles in between. This made the score 19-6. The Cycos got their fourth TD with a run from Stephen Dunne. He also caught the pass for the two-point conversion, making the score 27-6. Kelly found Farrell for a hat-trick of TD passes with Dunne once again adding the two-point conversion to make the score 35-6. Reference: [6]

The Cycos defence also got on the scoreboard, when Liam Farrell returned an interception for a TD. Iain McGuinness caught the one-point conversion, making it 42-6 to Drimnagh. McGuinness got an interception of his own to set up the final Drimnagh scoring drive, as Aidan Kelly ran in another TD. On defence, Cameron Cramer and Darren Brady both sacked the Quarterback, while the Eagles got two sacks of their own. QB Aidan Kelly picked up the Cycos MVP award. Reference: [6]
