To open the first full Irish American Football League season, the Taunton Raiders of the Eastern Football League in Massachusetts, USA, visited Dublin to play against Ireland’s Dublin Celts, Ireland’s first ever American Football team. The Celts were determined holding the Raiders to just two touchdowns until near the end of the first half when the Raiders returned an Interception 40 yards for a Touchdown. Report

The International Challenge Cup was a European Football League regional competition that ran from 1986 to 1988 below the level of the Eurobowl. Ireland’s representatives were the Carrickfergus Cougars in 1986 and the Belfast Giants (known as Tennent’s Giants in 1988 for sponsorship reasons) in 1987 and 1988. The opposition on all three occasions was British American Football League Scottish Conference outfit the Ayr Burners. After two losses in 1986 (Carrickfergus lost 8-28) and 1987 (Belfast Giants lost 0-48) the Tennent’s Giants finally won the Trophy for Ireland when they defeated the Ayr Burners 21-0 in 1988.

Four Nations American Football International Friendly – Great Britain Lions 22 Ireland Fighting Irish 0 – 17 March 1995

17 March 1995 – Saffron Lane, Leicester, England.

Great Britain Lions 22 Ireland Fighting Irish 0

The Ireland Fighting Irish, playing in their first Full International went down 22-0 to the Great Britain Lions,  who scored on two passing plays to Mark Cohen & Joe Greenidge before sacking the Irish QB for a Safety.

The GB Lions added a run from Nigel Flemming to make it 22-0 at the end.

The 1995 Irish squad was chosen after trials in November 1995. Tragically, Irish CoachDave Curran, died only hours after the trials in Belfast and Dublin. Coach Curran had been Offensive Co-Ordinator for the Ireland team, and had previously been a coach for 25 years in America, and had been Head Coach of both the Dublin Celts and Dublin Tornadoes, both multiple Shamrock Bowl winners.

This was the first International Match without Coach Curran, and took place in Leicester, on St. Patrick’s Day, 17 March 1995.

Report

The Dublin Celts were formed in 1984, and being the only fully kitted American Football team in Ireland at the time played matches against British opposition in 1985, beating Bristol Bombers 32-6. In 1986 further matches against British opposition were played, with the Celts winning against both the Newcastle Senators and Wirral Wolves (Merseyside). In 1987 the Craigavon Cowboys and Belfast Spartans also played English teams, although both teams lost on this occasion.

The Ayr Burners, from the West Coast of Scotland, played three matches against Northern Ireland opposition from 1986 to 1988. The Carrickfergus Cougars lost 28-8 to the Scottish team in 1986, and the following year the Belfast Giants lost to the Burners 48-0, before winning the return fixture 21-0 in 1988.

In 1989 the Belfast Spartans travelled to Jersey, in the Channel Islands to play a Combined Jersey Senates / Guernsey Gladiators team, tying the match 12-12. The Dublin Celts also lost a friendly match to the Bristol Packers.

In 1989, the Irish League elected to play in the Combined Gridiron League, which was an attempt at uniting the Irish, Scottish, Welsh, and English Regional Leagues, with Irish teams playing in an Irish Conference. In the playoffs, the Dublin Celts lost 13-18 to the Manchester Heroes in the Duke Premier Division, and The A26 Bulldogs, from Antrim, beat the Furness Phantoms, from Barrow in Cumbria, 32-6 before falling in the Baron First Division Semi-Finals 5-0 to Severn Valley Warlords.

In 1990 the Irish League was back to being Independent, although the Dublin Celts continued playing for one season in the NCMMA (the British Second Level), losing all four matches.

Report

The Irish American Football League elected to play in the Combined Gridiron League of the United Kingdom & Ireland in 1989, playing in two Divisions: Duke Premier & Baron 1st (The British & Irish 3rd & 4th Levels). Dublin Celts were narrowly defeated in the Quarter-Finals pf the Duke Premier Playoffs and A26 Bulldogs, from Antrim, reached the Semi-Finals of the Baron 1st Division where they lost 5-0 to Severn Valley Warlords from Gloucester.

The League returned to being an Irish-only League in 1990, but the Dublin Celts continued playing in the British Second Division, the NCMMA.
