Match Reports 2007

Week 1 – 25 March 2007 – Dublin Rebels 8 DCU Saints 0

A defensive battle opened the season for these two IAFL Central Dublin rivals. Both teamsfought tirelessly to shut down the oppositions offense, with the secondaries having a terrific game. Saints Defensive Backs Willie Coyne, Scott Quigly and Bobby Blankenship put in top performances, as did their counterparts on the Rebels, Steve Archibald, and Marcus Naylor. Saints linebackers Carl Rushe, Thomas O’Regan, Austan Ragans and Joe Carlyle put constant pressure on the Rebels offense, and this coupled the the DB’s effort resulted in Linemen Cathal O’Callaghan, Neil Callanan and Kris Konieczny overwhelming the Rebels Offensive line. alllowing Konieczny to get the Saints first sack of the season on the Rebels satr Quarterback Andy Dennehy.

The Rebels scored the only score of the match when Andy Dennehy connected with Wide Receiver Mike Kresowaty on a 13-yard Touchdown Pass in the first quarter, which was converted by Tight End Henry Wassermann, on a pass from Dennehy for the two points. [Ref: 4]

Week 3 – 14 April 2007 – DCU Saints 0 Dublin Dragons 6

This game was a defensive battle, with the lone score coming on a breakaway score in the second quarter. The Saints, however, managed to block the Dragons PAT (Point After Touchdown) attempt.Throughout the game both sides managed to force the oppositions offense to punt on fourth down. [Ref: 5]

Week 5 – 29 April 2007 – DCU Saints 20 Carrickfergus Knights 12

The DCU Saints won their first game of the year against the Knights to keep them in the leadership battle for the IAFL Central title. [Ref: 5]

Week 6 – 6 May 2007 – DCU Saints 0 Dublin Rebels 46

The DCU saints defense put up a good fight, with two interceptions, and the offense also fought gallantly, but it wasn’t enough as the Rebels ran out comfortable 46-0 winners, leaving the DCU Saints in second place in the Division. [Ref: 5]

Week 8 – 4 June 2007 – DCU Saints 2 University of Limerick Vikings 50

This was a resceduled game from Week 1, and was played in terrible condtions with an understrength DCU squad. The Vikings moved effectively on Offense to move downfield to score many times, and provided significant coverage on Defense to stifle the DCU Offense. Willie Coyne scored the DCU Saints only 2 points with an intercepted Vikings conversion attempt. [Ref: 6]

Week 9 – 11 June 2007 – Cork Admirals 64 DCU Saints 0

The DCU Saints ere overwhelmed in Cork against the Adirals who had over twice the numbers of another understrength DCU squad. A lot of the Saints players played Ironmen – playing both ways – and in extremely hot weather against a very strong Admirals team, were not able to put points on the board. [Ref: 6]

Week 10 – 17 June 2007 – Belfast Bulls 30 DCU Saints 0 #

The DCU saints forfeited this game to the Belfast Bulls, as they had a severely understrength team, more so than in the previous two games, and were unable to field a team as a lot of players were either away or involved in exams. [Ref: 6]

Week 11 – 25 June 2007 – 24 June 2007 – Dublin Dragons 0 DCU Saints 12

The Saints again had an understrength team, half the Dragons numbers, with players again playing both ways, but won 12-0 at home to win their second, and final, game of the season, and end on a high note. Willie Coyne put in a great performance returning a punt 70-odd yards for a Touchdown, and Colm Bolger, and Carl Rushe, who played both Quarterback and Linebacker, both also put in notable performances. History: Irish National American Football Team, started in 1995 as the Irish Leprechauns and playing friendlies and in the Nations Cup with England, Scotland and Wales. A match versus Mount St. Joseph’s High School from Baltimore in Maryland in 2000 led to the resurrection of the Irish American Football League which had disbanded in disarray earlier that year. The Team Ireland Programme played a further four games in 2004-2006 against English and American College Opposition before being put on hiatus. It was started again in 2016 with a Full International against the Dutch Lions. The Irish Wolfhounds, as the team has been Christened, has won its last two Full Internationals by a point both times against the Belgian Barbarians.

Report

The first Ireland National American Football Team was the IAFL All-Stars, a team made up of the top players in the Irish American Football League in the mid-to-late 1980s. In 1990s the first Irish Squad, of Irish-born players, and players with Irish Passports (Grandparents Rule), played a match against Dublin Tornadoes, winning 31-15. In 1991 the team lost 6-48 to the Northants Storm, one of the top UK sides. Then in 1994 a combined Ireland / Le Mans Caimans team lost to Team Canada 7-27 in France.

In 1995 the Fighting Irish team was assembled from Tryouts in Dublin, Belfast and Northamptonshire (England), and played its first full international against the Great Britain Lions, losing 22-0. Over the following year the team went 3-4, with wins over the Ottawa Gee-Gees Alumni (a team of former Canadian College players), The North West GB All-Stars and the Northants Storm, one of the United Kingdom’s best teams. The Fighting Irish also lost to the Gee-Gees, Team USA, and the Hanau Hawks, Germany’s National Champion, one of over 80 teams in Germany.

From 1996 to 1999 the Irish Leprechauns competed in the Nations Cup against the Scottish Bravehearts, Welsh Dragons and England, winning two matches against the Welsh Dragons.

In 2000, the only match played in Ireland was one between the Ireland team and a High School from Baltimore, Maryland (Mount St. Joesph’s High School). The match led to the resurrection of the Irish American Football League.

From 2004 to 2006 team Ireland played in the Celtic Classic against two United States College teams from the NCAA Division III level, as well as a match against the Coventry Jets, one of the top teams in Europe, and UK Champions. The team also played a friendly against the Great Britain Bulldogs. while Team Ireland lost all matches they showed great promise.

That promise was to unfold a decade later, when the Ireland National Team was restarted, with the Irish Wolfhounds, as they were named, going down to the Dutch Lions and Team USA American Football World (an elite High School National Team) and beating the Belgian Barbarians by a point, not once, but twice.

There has also been a couple of IAFL North and South All-Stars matches. In 1988 the Northern Hordes, made up of IAFL teams in Northern Ireland played the Dublin Celts in the Summer Bowl, and in 1995 in Co. Wicklow, a Dublin / IAFL South All-Stars team played the Great Britain Bulldogs, a British University National team. In 2003 the IAFL North and IAFL South All-Stars played each other in a game the North won 7-0.

Report

The Trim Bulldogs were set up by Californian Garland Drake in Trim, Co. Meath in september 2010 and entered the DV8 Development League in 2011.

The Trim Bulldogs had a difficult year in the DV8 Development League, losing all their matches heavily. The League was an 8-a-side League and was set up with two aims – Allowing teams which have been newly set up and building their player/equipment levels to play kitted American Football, and to enable larger IAFL teams to field 2nd teams.

The Bulldogs managed one Touchdown, however, against Drogheda Lightning. They also played matches against other Regional Leinster team, Tullamore Phoenix, as well as games against 2nds teams of more established IAFL teams Dublin Dragons and Craigavon Cowboys.

Report

The University of Limerick Vikings raced out of the blocks in 2011, defeating the Dublin Rebels in a close game as well as crushing UCD, Cork Admirals & Carrickfergus Knights in big wins of close to 40+ points or more. A series of walkovers against IAFL South rivals then ensued which left them in a state of match rustiness for the playoffs where they eventually lost by a point to the Dublin Rebels.

Season Report

The University of Limerick Vikings repeated as Shamrock Bowl Champions, defeating the Dublin Rebels 14-12 with a last-minute blocked Field Goal at the Cork Institute of Technology, thus gaining revenge for defeat in Week 13, their only loss of the season.

The season opened with comfortable wins over the two Belfast sides and the Tallaght Outlaws before two games with the Cork Admirals, their Munster rivals giving them the closest test so far in 2008 by putting up 25 points against the Vikings in Cork, but the UL side managed their best offensive performance of the year by scoring 34.

They followed this by lighting up the scoreboard in an emphatic 92-0 win over Tallaght Outlaws, before crashing back down to earth with a heavy 32-14 loss to the Dublin Rebels, which proved to be their only loss of the season. The Vikings regrouped and won their next two games in style, including the Semi-Final over the IAFL North Division Champions, Belfast Trojans.

Having won the IAFL South Division, and dispatched the IAFL North Division Champions in the Semi-Finals, they then faced the IAFL Central Division Champions for the second time that season, in what was an extremely close Final. They Vikings led 14-3 at half-time thanks to a Rushing Touchdown from MVP Adrian Garvey and an Interception Return for Touchdown by Darragh O’Callaghan before a second-half comeback by the Rebels ended with the blocked Field Goal.
