CUSAI Water Polo Intervarsities Women 2003-04 [Reference: 2]

Report

UCD won the Colleges and Universities Sports Association of Ireland Women’s Water Polo Intervarsities in 2003-04 after beating Dublin University 1-0 on penalties after a 2-2 tie in the Final. Eight Universities entered the Women’s Intervarsities, which were played in a single elimination (straight knockout) format on the 12th February 2004 in Trinity College Dublin and Dublin City University.

Representation was from the four corners of Ireland, with DCU, UCD and Dublin University (Dublin) and NUI Maynooth (Kildare) representing Leinster; University of Limerick and UCC (Cork) representing Munster; Queens University Belfast representing Ulster; and NUI Galway representing Connacht.

Report

NUI Galway won the Colleges and Universities Sports Association of Ireland Men’s Intervarsities in 2003-04, defeating Dublin University (Trinity College Dublin) 2-1 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the Final.

In all 10 Universities and Institutes of Technology entered the CUSAI Men’s Water Polo Intervarsities in 2003-04, which were played in a straight knockout (single elimination) format on Friday the 12th March 2004 in DCU and TCD.

All four corners of Ireland were represented, with Dublin Uninersity (Trinity College Dublin), University College Dublin, Dublin City University, Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland, and Dublin Institute of Technology all from Dublin and NUI Maynooth (Kildare) representing Leinster, University of Limerick and University College Cork representing Munster, Queen’s University Belfast representing Ulster and NUI Galway representing Connacht.

St. Vincent’s were Ireland Water Polo Men’s National League Division 1 Champions three years running from 2016-17 to 2018-19, and were two points in front with two games in hand in 2019-20 when the season was cancelled on 7 March 2020 due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic.

Cathal Brugha from Belfast were their nearest challengers during this time finishing in second place on three occasions. Galway’s Corrib were the runners-up on the other occasion (2017-18).

In 2019-20 three teams were from Dublin (National Aquatic Centre Blachardstown Pool); St. Vincent’s, North Dublin, Half Moon and Sandycove; three from the Greater Belfast Area (Lisburn-Castlereagh Pool): Cathal Brugha, Cu Chulainn, Clonard and Setanta; and one from Galway (NUI Galway Pool): Corrib.

Cathal Brugha beat Glenalbyn 8-3 in the Final of the Irish Water Polo Association Clontarf Euro Tab U21 Tournament at St. Vincent’s Pool, Glasnevin, Dublin 11 in January 1998.

Marian, Guinness, Sandycove A, Glenalbyn, St. Vincent’s and Cathal Brugha had won through from the Group Stage, with a Series of Playoffs to determine the four Semi-finalists following.

The plate Competition for teams knocked out in the Group stage on saturday, was won by Corrib 7-3 over Clontarf.

Cathal Brugha defeated St. Vincent’s A 11-0 in the Premier Final of the Clontarf Euro Tab U21 Water Polo Tournament, with goals coming from C. Campfield (6), M. Campfield (3), A. McMahon, and B. Rice.

The Plate Final was won by St. Vincent’s B 6-1 against hosts Clontarf. In all eight teams entered with the tournament played as a knockout Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final, and the four Quarter-Final losers entering the Plate.

It was held at St. Vincent’s Pool, Glasnevin, Dublin 11, on St. Patrick’s Weekend.

Ireland were outclassed in the Water Polo Senior Home Internationals in Wishaw, Scotland from 6th to 8th March 1992. The Irish team was soundly beaten by both the Scots and Welsh, before coming close in their final game to Wales, losing by 16-19 in a close encounter.

Peter Cusack celebrated his first Cap for Ireland by scoring two goals in the opening match with Scotland.

Report

Guinness won the Premier Title at the Euro Tab U21 Water Polo Tournament at St. Vincent’s Pool, Glasnevin, Dublin, with a 6-5 win over Warrender in the Final. They had earlier defeated Sandycove and Cathal Brugha in the Quater-Finals and Semi-Finals.

The six Premier teams played a knockout (elimination) Quarter-Final before the three losers played in a round-robin group to determine the fourth semi-finalist. C. McGreggor was player of the Tournament and A Fogarty of Sandycove scored the fastest goal in 10 seconds.

There was also a plate competition for teams knocked out in the Preliminary Group round, featuring Clondalkin, Clonard, Metro and Glenalbyn B.
