Playoffs Preview (19-20 November 2022)

The Top four teams in each Division reach the Playoffs with Cross-Division Match-Ups in Round 1 (Quarter-Finals). Last years Rice Bowl winners Fujitsu Frontiers (5-0) host Asahi Beer Silver Star (2-3) in a match the Frontiers should easily win. 2021’s Rice Bowl runners-up and 2022 Division A Champions Panasonic Impulse (5-0) likewise should have little trouble defeating Asahi Soft Drinks Challengers (2-3). The other two quarter-finals are harder to judge with IBM Big Blue (4-1) coming up against Elecom Kobe Finies (3-1-1) and Obic Seagulls (3-1-1) hosting Nojima Sagamihara Rise (3-2) in Yokohama Stadium. [References: 1-2; 8]

The relegation match-ups pit Tokyo Gas Creators (1-4) against All Mitsubishi Lions (0-5) and Tainai Deers (1-4) against Otonari Fukuoka Suns (0-5). [References: 8]

Playoffs Round 1 (19-20 November 2022)

The third match on Saturday 19 November 2022 saw Panasonic Impulse (6-0) struggle to beat Asahi Soft Drinks Challengers (2-4) 38-28 in the Rice Bowl Playoffs Round 1 at Yodoko Sakura Stadium. The following day at Yokohama Stadium in a triple-header Elecom Kobe Finies (4-1-1) provided a minor shock in defeating IBM Big Blue (4-2) 35-25, defending Champions Fujitsu Frontiers (6-0) defeated Asahi Beer Silver Star (2-4) 53-3 in a blow-out and Obic Seagulls (4-1-1) triumphed 21-9 versus Nojima Sagamihara Rise (3-3). Panasonic Impulse and Fujitsu Frontiers set up a rematch of the 2021 Rice Bowl after defeating Obic Seagulls 30-10 and Elecom Kobe Finies 39-21 respectively in the Semi-Finals. Rice Bowl 76 (3 January 2023)

Despite falling behind 14-0 early on thanks to two Mitchell Victor Jamano Touchdown runs for Panasonic Impulse, Fujitsu Frontiers captured their second Rice Bowl in a row thanks to three Touchdown runs by their own Trashawn Nixon, the first one pulling them to within four points at the half, the second bringing the Frontiers back into the game after Panasonic’s Quarterback Jaylon Henderson found Watanabe Jamal for a 10-yard Touchdown Pass and then Nixon’s third Rushing TD, which earned him the MVP (Most Valuable Player) Award and put Fujitsu 29-21 up following the Frontiers go-ahead Passing TD from QB Tsubasa Takagi to Kyohei Kokaji which put Fujitsu 22-21 up. Frontiers still had to defend for the Final 3 minutes 14 seconds of the match, and despite good 25 yard drive by Panasonic it was ended with Fujitsu’s Defensive Back Takutoshi Takaoka taking his second Interception of the day. Final Score: Fujitsu Frontiers 29 Panasonic Impulse 21 [References: 10] Note: For Rice Bowl Box-Score and Scorers please click on the game in Question (Fujitsu Frontiers 29 Panasonic Impulse 21) in the Rice Bowl Tournament Scoreboard Above.

About Japan X-League X1 Super 2022

The Japan X-League X1 Super is the top Division of American Football in Japan playing for the Rice Bowl, Japan’s equivalent of the Super Bowl. The Rice Bowl is in its’ 76th season this year, starting out as a University All-Star game between East and West in 1947. After 24 wins for Kanto and 12 for Kansai the Rice Bowl became in 1984 a contest between the University Champions and the Social (Club) Champions. Ritsumeikan University Panthers were in 2009 the last University Champions to win the Rice Bowl and in 2021 the Rice Bowl became the sole possession of the X-League after growing concern for the safety of the University players who were younger and less experienced than their Social counterparts, all of whom could boast American professionals in star positions. For 2022 the X-League X1 Super (the top division in Japanese American Football) added four new teams promoted from the X1 Area League – Asahi Beer Silver Star, Asahi Soft Drinks Club Challengers, Tainai Deers and Otonari Fukuoka Suns. The X1 Super was divided into two divisions of six (A and B) to accomodate the promoted teams.

Recap

The Major Alternative Football Leagues of 2021 were The Spring League which kicked off its 5th season this year, with a major expansion, adding a second hub city and four teams to its schedule, the European League of Football, Japan X-League X1 Super, and the Canadian Football League.

The Linemen won TSL North in Indianapolis with a 5-1 record and the Jousters were Champions of TSL South in Houston with a 4-2 record. In a close Mega Bowl Linemen defeated Jousters 26-23 [13-14]. Tadhg Leader, former Connacht Rugby player, who was born in Ireland, played kicker for the Aviators who finished 0-6 in the TSL North [8-10].

Following the TSL season, Tadhg Leader moved on to play for Panthers Wroclaw of Poland in the European League of Football, along with a young Tallaght, South Dublin County native Kevin Mayo. The Panthers finished the season 6-4 in the ELF North but lost the Semi-Final 27-30 at Hamburg Sea Devils, who finished runners-up to ELF South Champions Frankfurt Galaxy (9-1) who won the ELF Championship Game 32-30 in an even closer game than the TSL Mega Bowl [7-8].

By the Fall the Japan X-League had kicked off and the 6-1 Fujitsu Frontiers upset the 7-0 Panasonic Impulse 24-20 in the Rice Bowl [4-5]. This was the first year the JXL had sole ownership of the Rice Bowl, previously the X-League Champions contested the Rice Bowl with the College Champions in Japan.

The Canadian Football League, the biggest of the Major Alternative Football Leagues played a covid-shortened 14-game schedule, with newly renamed Edmonton Elks struggling to a 3-11 record, worst in the CFL. The big news on the Football field however was Winnipeg Blue Bombers who went 11-3 in winning the CFL West before triumphing 33-25 against Hamilton Tiger-Cats (8-6) who had upset CFL East Champions Toronto Argonauts 27-19 in the Eastern Final [2].

Tadhg Leader – Irish-born Player (Panthers Wroclaw ELF and Aviators TSL)

Former Connacht Rugby player Tadhg Leader was born in Galway, Ireland. At the age of 15 he and his brother Darragh headed out to kick some Rugby balls at their local pitch on Christmas Day. His dad, a former Galwegians RFC Rugby player made a bet with them that they could not kick the ball over the bars from the halfway line. Both Tadhg and his brother Darragh won €50 each.

Tadhg went on to play Rugby Professionally for Connacht and Darragh now lives in USA where he coaches at Clemson University Tigers. Tadhg suffered a number of injuries during his last few years at Connacht and after playing in Italy he ended up studying in USA and playing for both New England Free Jacks in Major League Rugby and making his Test debut for USA Eagles Rugby Union National Team.

Tadhg was signed up to play another year of Rugby Union in 2021 when the kicker started kicking American Footballs for fun. People took notice and said he should try out for American Football teams and so he went off to San Diego where he was kicking alongside Super Bowl-winning athletes. Unsure of his own ability he asked John Carney, who has 23 years of experience kicking Footballs and Carney said he could mix it with the NFL players.

Before long Leader found himself playing for the Aviators in The Spring League in USA. The Aviatiors, one of four teams based in Indianapolis, a COVID-19 Pod and one of two Pods in the 8-team league in 2021 finished with an 0-6 record in 2021. On May 7 versus Alphas Tadhg Leader scored the first points of his American Football career kicking a Field Goal to make the score Aviators 3 Alphas 7 at Halftime.

After spending Spring in Indianapolis with the Aviators Tadhg signed for Panthers Wroclaw in the European League of Football, making his debut on opening day in a 55-39 victory over Cologne Centurions. [References: 8-10]

Kevin Mayo – Irish Player (Panthers Wroclaw ELF)

Kevin Mayo, who is from Tallaght, South Dublin Co. in Ireland, and had previously played for the South Dublin Panthers in the American Football Ireland League joined the Panthers Wroclaw at the tail end of the season after being picked up by North Park University in Chicago, an NCAA Division III College.

Week 1 Recap

Week 1 in the new Era of Japan X-League kicked off on Saturday, 4 September with Fujitsu Frontiers defeating Nojima Sagamihara Rise 49-17 and Panasonic Impulse winning by a landslide 71-0 against Tokyo Gas Creators. The following day, however, the single game played was much closer, in fact the match-up between IBM Big Blue and Elecom Kobe Finies ended up a 26-26 tie. The other match, to be played on the 5th September, between All-Mitsubishi Lions and Obic Seagulls was postponed.

Weeks 2-6 Recap

The big match-up between the two undefeated teams after five weeks went the way of Panasonic Impulse as they narrowly defeated Fujitsu Frontiers 26-20 to move to 6-0. Frontiers now have to regroup for another crucial top-of-the-standings game with Obic Seagulls shocked Elecom Kobe Finies 38-21 (both Fujitsu and Obic stand on 5-1) in the final week of the regular season. Kobe dropped to 2-4. In the other game that was crucial to playoff hopes IBM Big Blue defeated Nojima Sagamihara Rise 32-28 to move to 2-3-1 and in good position for the fourth playoff spot.

Week 7 Recap

Nojima Sagamihara Rise defeated All-Mitsubishi Lions 40-3 on the Saturday in a game with slim hopes for Rise to reach the Playoffs. Nojima finished 3-4 on the season and All-Mitsubishi 0-7. The Rise were eliminated from Playoff contention by IBM Big Blue’s 34-26 victory on the same day versus Tokyo Gas Creators leaving Big Blue 3-3-1 on the season and in the Playoffs and Creators finished 2-5 with their slim hopes of making the playoffs dashed by the loss. Elecom Kobe Finies finished the season with five straight losses after a 7-52 thrashing by Panasonic Impulse who took homefield advantage into the Playoffs after finishing the season 7-0 and on top of the 8-team X1 Super. In the week’s big game Fujitsu Frontiers narrowly defeated Obic Seagulls 14-13 to leave the Frontiers in second place on 6-1 and Seagulls in third on 5-2. Both Frontiers and Seagulls meet again in the Playoffs with Fujitsu having homefield advantage.

Semi-Finals Recap

Panasonic Impulse defeated IBM Big Blue 38-31 in a shootout to reach the 75th Rice Bowl on 3rd January 2022 where they will meet Fujitsu Frontiers after the Frontiers’ 17-10 victory over Obic Seagulls. Panasonic Impulse go into the Rice Bowl as favourites after a perfect season up to this point and having handed Fujitsu the Frontiers’ only defeat of the season, a 26-20 game back in Week 6 on November 13. Panasonic’s win over IBM was not as big as their regular season victory over the Big Blue, which ended 65-13 in a blowout. Fujitsu’s win over Obic was not as close as the 14-13 game which the Frontiers won in Week 1, but was similarly low-scoring.

Rice Bowl 75 Recap

Fujitsu Frontiers, playing in their 9th Social Championship game in a row, won the 75th Rice Bowl 24-18 against Number 1 Ranked Panasonic Impulse. The Frontiers had won four Rice Bowls straight from 2016 to 2019 but 2020 was the year of Obic Seagulls. 2021 again saw Fujitsu take the title of not just Working People (Social Championship – X League) but the Rice Bowl, this year the sole ownership of the X-League Social Championship (College Champions no longer compete for Rice Bowl) [23, 24] . Of Irish interest in the game is a player by the name Brennan – an Irish surname from Ossory, now Co. Kilkenny [25, 26]. Brennan played Wide Receiver for Panasonic Impulse, making at least two receptions [24].

About the JAFA Japan X-League X1 Super 2021

The Japan American Football Association is the National Governing Body for American Football in Japan. The X-League is the Top Level Social League (Businesses) and from 1984 to 2020 contested the Rice Bowl with the College Champions. However, due to the Social Champions winning 11 Rice Bowl’s in-a-row in what was increasingly a mismatch, the X-League has taken over in 2021 sole ownership of the Rice Bowl (Japan’s Super Bowl). The Rice Bowl has been played since 1947 and Japan is one of the four to five Major Gridiron Football countries in the World, along with USA, Canada, Mexico and Germany.

Report

With the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic in full swing, the 2020 Japan Collegiate American Football Association was reduced to just the Kansai and Kanto Football Regions, themselves reduced to a series of Challenge Games and then knockouts. Kansai Division 1 Final was won by Kwansei Gakuin University Fighters 16-14 versus Ritsumeikan University Panthers and Kanto Region Division 1 Top 8 Final by Nihon University Phoenix 38-14 versus Sakuramibayashi.

The Koshien Bowl itself was won by Kwansei Gakuin University 42-24 and they became the last ever Student Representatives to take part in the Rice Bowl, the pinnacle of American Football in Japan, which for the first 36 years was a College All-Star game between Kanto (West) and Kansai (East) and then from 1984 to 2021 was between the Social Champions (X-League Corporate) and College Champions. From 2021 season (2022 Rice Bowl) onwards it shall be an X-League only game, the level of professionalism in that league being too strong for the College Champions.

The 2020 Kanto Collegiate Football Association was severely curtailed due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic. with over half the Universities not competing, The Top 4 Divisions were split into 2 Blocks, each playing three matches with the Placement matches between the two first placed teams, two second placed teams and so on making up a short post-season. In Division 1 Top 8, Nihon University triumphed 38-14 in the Final against J. F. Oberlin University (University of Sakuramibayashi). They were then due to meet Kwansei Gakuin University for the Koshien Bowl (Japan Collegiate American Football Association title game).

Report

Ritsumeikan Panthers, the last Collegiate team to ever win the Rice Bowl (Japan’s Super Bowl) in 2009, won the Kansai Football Championship in 2019, one of the big two College Football Regions in Japan (the other being Kanto). They finished on 6-1, the same as Kwansei Gakuin Fighters, but won the tie-breaker having defeated them during the season. Kobe Ravens also reached the All-Japan Championship playoffs (in the West Japan side of the draw) with a 5-2 record, also the same as fourth placed Kansai Kaizers, but again had defeated them during the season. There were 4 divisions within Kansai Football in 2019 with Division 3 divided into two blocks and Division 4 into 3 Blocks making 7 Divisions/Blocks in Total.

Report

Kwansei Gakuin University Fighters won the 2019 Koshien Bowl in Japan’s College Football with a 38-28 victory over Waseda Big Bears in the Final match. They had earlier finished runners-up in the Kansai Collegiate American Football Association with a loss to Ritsumeikan Panthers in the Regular season, but made no mistake in the Playoffs, knocking out first Kyushu Champions Seinan Gakuin Green Dolphins 47-26 in the West Japan 2nd Round, before defeating two big Kansai rivals (Kobe Ravens and revenge over Ritsumeikan Panthers) in the West Japan Semi-Finals and Final.

Waseda University Big Bears had defeated North Japan Pine Bowl Champions Tohoku University Hornets 41-10 in the East Japan Bowl (Kanto v North Japan). The North Japan Bowl between the Tohoku Champions (Tohoku Hornets) and Hokkaido Champions (Hokkaido Big Green) had been a blowout (34-9 to Tohoku) as had the West Japan 1st Round match between Chukyo Eagles (Tokai Champions) and Chushikoku Champions Hiroshima Raccoons who were defeated 7-59. Chukyo then lost to Kobe Ravens in the West Japan 2nd Round. Kansai, being the biggest Association, gets three representatives in the College Playoffs.

Report

The Rice Bowl is the pinnacle of American Football in Japan, the first 36 editions were a University All-Star Game, between East and West with 24 wins for Kanto and 12 for Kansai [1].Beginning in 1984 it has was played between the winners of the University Championship and the winners of the X-Bowl (Social Championship). [1] During the Social v University Era it always took place on the 3rd of January. [2-3]

Recruit / Orbic Seagulls were the most succesful team in the Social v University Era, winning 7 Rice Bowls, and Fujitsu Frontiers second with 5 victories, and Matsushita Electric Works / Panasonic & winning four each. The most successful University sides have been Kyoto University Gangsters & Nihon University Phoenix with four apeice. The most finals appearances belongs to Kwansei Gakuin University Fighters with 13 appearances in total, although with only one victory, including 6 losses in the last 9 years. [2-3]

With Ritsumeikan University Panthers the last University team to win in 2009, and the risk to students, who are younger and less experienced than the X-League teams, all of whom would boast American Professional imports at star positions, the Rice Bowl became from 2021 onwards an X-League only Final.
