About

European Inter-State Ice Hockey Leagues give teams in smaller countries a chance to compete at a higher level on a regular basis as well as playing in their own National Leagues. The East European Hockey League (Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania), Alpen League (Austria, Italy, Slovenia), Cup of the Lowlands (Belgium, Netherlands), Atlantic League (France, Netherlands, Denmark), and Balkan League (Romania, Bulgaria, Yugoslavia) were the European Inter-State Leagues of 1996-97. Each of these countries had either competed in the World Championships in 1996, either in Pool A without qualifying for the Final Stages (Italy, Austria, France), Pool B (Latvia, Switzerland, Belarus, Denmark, Netherlands), Pool C (Ukraine, Slovenia, Romania) or Pool D (Lithuania, Yugoslavia, Belgium, Bulgaria).
