Toronto Argonauts defeated Montreal Alouettes 20-19 to go top of the Eastern Division on 1-0. The two Inter-Division games saw Ottawa REDBLACKS fall to 0-2 after losing to defending Champions Winnipeg Blue Bombers 19-12. Winnipeg improved to 2-0 with the win as Calgary Stampeders joined the Blue Bombers on 2-0 with a 33-30 victory over Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who fell to 0-2. The Western Division match-up saw Saskatchewan Roughriders also move to 2-0 with a 26-16 triumph over Edmonton Elks, who lost their second game. [References: 2]

Week 3 (24-26 June 2022)

Three Inter-Division match-ups saw Montreal Alouettes improve to 1-2 with a shock 37-13 victory at Saskatchewan Roughriders who lost for the first time in 2022; British Columbia Lions improve to 3-0 with a huge 44-3 defeat of the 0-2 Toronto Argonauts; and Winnipeg Blue Bombers also improved to 3-0 as they defeated Hamilton Tiger-Cats 26-12. [References: 2]

Weeks 4-8 (2-31 July 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers marched on to 8-0 with five victories in July – at Toronto (23-22), at BC Lions (43-22), versus Calgary (26-19), at Edmonton (24-10) and at Calgary (35-28). Their nearest challengers in the West Division were British Columbia Lions on 5-1 who had defeated Ottawa 34-31 on the road and Hamilton Tiger-Cats 17-12 in Vancouver and Saskatchewan 32-17 in Regina. Calgary Stampeders were in third on 4-2, with a 49-6 victory at Edmonton. The difference between the teams was Winnipeg’s victories over the Stampeders (twice) and Lions (once). Saskatchewan Roughriders trailed on 4-4 but were still in with a shot at a crossover playoff spot with wins versus Montreal Alouettes (41-20) and Ottawa REDBLACKS (28-13) before three losses in a row to Toronto (twice) and BC Lions (once). Edmonton were at the foot of the Standings with a 2-5 record, although had defeated Montreal Alouettes 32-31 in week 6.

The Toronto Argonauts were leading the East Division on 3-2 following two wins in two weeks versus Saskatchewan Roughriders (30-24 and 31-21), while Montreal Alouettes and Hamilton Tiger-Cats were both still in the running for a playoff spot, both standing on 2-5. Montreal had defeated Ottawa 40-33 and Hamilton Tiger-Cats had gained wins over Ottawa (25-23) and Montreal (24-17), the latter a crucial game for the TiCats. Ottawa REDBLACKS languished in last place in the East on 0-6. On 31 July the previous winless Ottawa REDBLACKS created a shock with a 23-13 home victory over division leading Toronto Argonauts. [References: 2]

Week 9 (5-7 August 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers remained on course for a three-peat with a 35-20 defeat of Montreal Alouettes who fell to 2-6, as the Blue Bombers marched on to a ninth consecutive victory while also remaining unbeaten. Calgary Stampeders improved to 5-2 with a 17-3 victory over Ottawa REDBLACKS who despite being only 1-7 were still only one game off a playoff spot. Toronto Argonauts extended their lead in the East with a 34-20 victory over Hamilton TigerCats who dropped to 2-6 as the Argos improved to 4-3. The final game of the weekend was a huge 46-14 defeat of Edmonton Elks by BC Lions as the Lions improved to 6-1 and the Elks, still not realistically out of a crossover playoff spot, fell to 2-6. [References: 2]

Week 10 (12-14 August 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (9-1) were defeated for the first time in the 2022 season after losing 17-20 in overtime to Montreal Alouettes who improved to 3-6. Elsewhere BC Lions (7-1) kept up the pace with Winnipeg after a thrilling 41-40 victory at Calgary Stampeders (5-3). Hamilton Tiger-Cats also improved to 3-6 in the weaker East Division after winning 34-27 at home to Toronto Argonauts (4-4). Saskatchewan Roughriders (5-4) remained on course for a crossover playoff spot with a 34-23 victory over the 2-7 Edmonton Elks. [References: 2]

Week 11 (20-21 August 2022)

With Winnipeg Blue Bombers not playing, the British Columbia Lions took the opportunity to close the gap on the West Division leaders to half a game with a 28-10 victory at Saskatchewan Roughriders, who despite falling to 5-5 were still in with a good chance of making the crossover playoff spot. Calgary Stampeders improved to 6-3 with a 22-19 victory at Toronto Argonauts meaning with the Argos on 4-5 every team in the East Division was now on a losing record. Montreal Alouettes defeated Hamilton Tiger-Cats 29-28 in another close game as the Als improved to 4-6 and the TiCats dropped to 3-7. In the other game between the two cellar-dwellers Edmonton Elks improved to 3-7 with a 30-12 triumph at the 1-8 Ottawa REDBLACKS. [References: 2]

Week 12 (26-28 August 2022)

In the East Division a win for Toronto Argonauts (37-20) over Tadhg Leader’s former team Hamilton Tiger-Cats put them back in sole possession of first place on 5-5 with Montreal Alouettes (4-6) on a bye week. Ottawa REDBLACKS (2-8) gained a second victory of the season, 25-18 at fellow strugglers Edmonton Elks (3-8) putting Edmonton well out of the West Division running. Saskatchewan Roughriders had an important 23-16 victory at B.C. Lions which put the Regina team on 6-5 and improving their chances of making the playoffs and delivering a blow to the Vancouver-based team’s hopes of a division championship after Winnipeg Blue Bombers won 31-29 at home in Manitoba versus Calgary Stampeders. Winnipeg were now on 10-1, a game and a half ahead of B.C. Lions while the Stampeders were on 6-4. [References: 2]

Week 13 (3-5 September 2022)

Ottawa REDBLACKS caused a minor shock in defeating Montreal Alouettes 38-24 in Week 13, improving to 3-8 and in the process markedly improving their playoff chances. The REDBLACKS were 1-8 two weeks previously and were now just one game behind Montreal (4-7) in the race for the second automatic playoff spot in the Eastern Division. Toronto Argonauts triumphed 28-8 at Hamilton Tiger-Cats to go 6-5 at the top of the East. Hamilton dropped to last place on 3-9.

The West Division was still Winnipeg’s to lose as the two-time defending champions improved to 11-1 with a close 20-18 victory at Saskatchewan Roughriders, with the ‘riders dropping to 6-6 but still in a crossover playoff spot. In the other game Calgary Stampeders improved to 7-4 after winning 26-18 at home to Alberta rivals Edmonton Elks who were adrift at the bottom of the West on 3-9. B.C. Lions who had a bye week were still in second on 8-2. [References: 2]

Week 14 (10-11 September 2022)

Montreal Alouettes bounced back from a shock defeat to Ottawa REDBLACKS to cause one the big upsets of the season themselves, triumphing 31-10 versus the British Columbia Lions. It was only B.C.’s third defeat of the season, and means Winnipeg Blue Bombers are virtually guaranteed the division title with seven weeks remaining after the Bombers went four wins in front with a 54-20 defeat of Saskatchewan Roughriders, who dropped to 6-7 on the year. Calgary Stampeders topped the Blue Bombers in the scoring stakes the next day however winning 56-20 at Edmonton Elks to improve to 8-4 and put a bit of light between themselves and the Regina-based ‘Riders for third place in the West. The Elks fell to 3-10 and well out of contention for the playoffs with the loss. Toronto Argonauts maintained their two-game cushion on Montreal at the top of the East Division after they won 24-19 at Ottawa who dropped to 3-9 and increasingly likely to fail to make the playoffs. As things stood after an average of 12 gamers played from 18 in total, Winnipeg Blue Bombers had clinched a playoff berth with no team as yet eliminated. [References: 2]

Week 15 (17-18 September 2022)

The big news in week 12 was Winnipeg’s second loss only all season, 31-48 at Hamilton Tiger-Cats, which left the Blue Bombers on 12-2 and the TiCats on 4-9 back in the playoff hunt. In other matches Saskatchewan Roughriders also had a shock defeat, 24-26 at home to Edmonton Elks, leaving the ‘riders on 6-8 and Edmonton on 4-10, still unbelievably mathematically still not eliminated from the playoffs. In a big game in the West Division B.C. Lions won 31-29 at Calgary Stampeders, leaving the Lions (9-3) with an edge for second place over the Stamps (8-5) [References: 2]

Week 16 (24-25 September 2022)

Montreal (6-7) kept the pressure on Toronto Argonauts in the East Division with a 23-16 victory at home to Hamilton Tiger-Cats (4-10). The Argos (8-5) won 45-15 at Ottawa REDBLACKS (3-10). In the West Division the only game played was between second placed British Columbia Lions (9-4) and third placed Calgary Stampeders (9-5) who moved level with B.C. on 18 Points with a 25-11 win in Vancouver. [References: 2] Winnipeg Blue Bombers, B.C. Lions, Calgary Stampeders and Toronto Argonauts had all with the weekends results clinched Playoff Berths. [References: 2]

Week 17 (1-2 October 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (13-2) continued tearing up the field, defeating the 6-9 Saskatchewan Roughriders 31-13. The Bombers were still not assured of the Western Division Championship, though, as B.C. Lions improved to 10-4 with a 34-19 victory over Ottawa REDBLACKS (3-11) and Calgary Stampeders (10-5) won 29-2 versus Toronto Argonauts (8-6). The Argos were joined in the Playoffs in the Eastern Division by Montreal Alouettes, who improved to 7-7 with a 25-18 triumph over Edmonton Elks (4-11). With only one playoff place remaining, and both Division Championships yet to be decided, it was all to play for with four weeks remaining in the regular season. [References: 2]

Week 18 (8-10 October 2022)

Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-10) defeated Saskatchewan 18-14 to put some pressure on the Roughriders (6-10) for the Crossover Playoff spot. Toronto Argonauts (9-6) won 23-20 at home to British Columbia Lions (10-5) which handed the Western Division title to Winnipeg Blue Bombers who improved to 14-2 after a huge 48-11 win versus Edmonton Elks (4-12). Meanwhile Ottawa REDBLACKS (4-11) won 24-18 at Montreal Alouettes (7-8) which meant the REDBLACKS were still not mathematically eliminated. [References: 2]

Week 19 (15-16 October 2022)

Montreal Alouettes defeated Ottawa REDBLACKS 34-30 to improve to 8-8 as Ottawa slipped to 4-12. Hamilton Tiger-Cats won 35-32 at Calgary Stampeders as they improved their chances of gaining the crossover playoff spot going to 6-10, level with Saskatchewan Roughriders who had a bye week. Calgary were now on 10-6, one game behind B.C. Lions who had a shock 40-32 victory over Winnipeg Blue Bombers who were on 14-3 with only their third loss in 2022. [References: 2-2B]

Week 20 (22-23 October 2022)

Despite a big second quarter where the REDBLACKS outscored the Tiger-Cats 21-0, Hamilton came back in the 4th Quarter to win 30-27 a move a step closer to the playoffs. A big second quarter where the B.C. Lions outscored the Edmonton Elks 17-0 was the difference between the teams as the Lions secured second place in the West Division with a 31-14 victory. Despite a fourth quarter comeback by the Als where Montreal scored 17 points the Toronto Argonauts held on for the win, defeating the Alouettes 24-23 to make sure of the East Division Championship. Saskatchewan Roughriders playoff chances were dealt an almost unrecoverable blow after the Calgary Stampeders outscored the ‘Riders in each of the first three quarters to secure a 32-21 win. [References: 2-2B]

Week 21 (29-30 October 2022)

Winnipeg Blue Bombers took a 14-0 first quarter lead and led the rest of the game as they finished the regular season with a franchise-record 15-3 record. B.C. Lions finish on 12-6. 21 First quarter points were enough for the Montreal Alouettes to see out a hard-earned victory over Division Champions Toronto Argonauts. Als finish season on 9-9 in second place in the East, Argos on 11-7 in first place. Hamilton Tiger-cats qualified for the cross-over spot in the playoffs with a 23-16 victory at Ottawa REDBLACKS. Ticats finish 8-10 and REDBLACKS 4-14. Calgary Stampeders had a 36-10 victory at home over the slumping Saskatchewan Roughriders to finish the season 12-6 in third place in the West as the ‘Riders finished 6-12. [References: 2-2C]

109th Grey Cup (20 November 2022 – Regina, Saskatchewan)

A Ouellette (Two Rushing Touchdowns) and B Bede (Three Field Goals, Two Convert Kicks and One Rouge (Single) were the heroes for Toronto Argonauts scoring 12 points each, and accounting for all the Argos points between them as Toronto ended Winnipeg Blue Bombers dreams of a dynasty with a close 24-23 victory in Regina, Saskatchewan.
