Recap

The London Area Panthers scored first in each quarter but the St. Albans Kestrels replied in each quarter as a dropped 2-point conversion attempt in the last seconds was the difference between these two teams in the Capital Bowl 1987.

The Irish-named duo of Neil Griffiths (Quarterback) and Mick Sheehan (Wide receiver) were both involved in the last attempt at equalising, as Griffiths found tight end Graham Martin for a touchdown to put the Kestrels within two points of the Panthers, however Sheelan dropped the two-point conversion attempt at the end, giving the game to London Area.

The Panthers had scored first through Andy Scott with a short run for Touchdown and a Point After Touchdown kick by Chris Payne. The Kestrels came within a point through Steve Burn leaving it 7-6 after the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Chris Payne make it 10-6 to LA Panthers with a Field Goal before Kestrels’ nose tackle Andy Briars secured a safety to make it 10-8 at the half time whistle.

The third quarter continued as before with the Panthers yet again scoring first, a touchdown catch by Peter Cushing from 20 yards after Ryan Holness ran an option, before the Kestrels again hit back yet again, through running back Trevor Grant.

The fourth quarter proved to be thrilling as the Panthers extended their lead to 22-14 through Ryan Holness’ short TD run, before Griffiths found tight end Martin with a late TD pass. The Panthers breathed a sigh of relief as what would have been a game-tying conversion was dropped.
