Ireland opened the 1991 Hockey Home Countries Under 21 Championship with a 1-1 draw with Scotland, T Stronge scoring Ireland’s goal. The first match of the tournament had seen hosts Wales lose out 2-0 to England. England subsequently defeated Scotland 4-0 in the third match, which was followed by Ireland’s single goal victory over Wales, scored by D Gay. This left Ireland in second and needing a win over England to claim the title, however, a 1-1 draw, good at the best of times against England, left Ireland disappointed, the Irish goal again scored by D Gay. Wales finished off the tournament with a 3-2 win versus Scotland to finish third in front of the home crowd in Carmarthen, North Wales.
