Report
In 1976 the NFL played the first Official NFL match outside USA in Tokyo, Japan, with the St. Louis Cardinals defeating the San Diego Chargers 20-10. The NFL did not return there until 1989, despite a thriving American Football Scene in Japan, as it took the American Bowl Preseason series of games outside of Europe for the first time. Since then 13 more games have been played in Japan, all but one in Tokyo.
A wide variety of teams has played there, with the San Francisco 49ers travelling over the Pacific on three occasions, and Kansas City Chiefs, San Diego Chargers, Atlanta Falcons, Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys making a return trip. Matches were played annually in Tokyo from 1989 to 2005 inclusively, except 1997, 1999, 2001 and 2004 when there were no matches and 2002 when the American Bowl was played in Osaka, with the Washington Redskins triumphing 38-7 over the 49ers.
