Report

The first ever Baseball game played in public between two Irish teams was between the Tramore Sea Lions and Waterford Walruses in Tramore in 1961. The teams were of 12-15 year olds and were the only two in the country at the time. After playing a number of games through the season they played a Championship game at the end, won 14-12 by Tramore in extra innings. [1]

Waterford Walruses gained revenge the following year, winning by the slimmest of margins 8-7. [2]

In 1963 there were plans for Tramore to visit Netherlands, which is one of the 10 Major Baseball Countries in the World. [3]

By 1964 the Tramore Club appears to have disappeared and a new Club formed in Dublin, with the Irish Baseball Association being formed by the Dublin and Waterford Baseball Clubs. Dublin shocked the more experienced Waterford 7-1 in 1964. [4]

In 1965 the Dutch Federation planned to send a team to Ireland to play the first International here. The Waterford Club managed to get hold of colour film of the 1965 World Series which caused great excitement. [5]

The 1966 Championship was won by Dublin, 10-9 over Waterford, with a big fourth innings where they scored seven runs. [6]

The teams were for players 12-15 years old. Baseball appears to have ceased in Ireland after this.

Report

Cup Report

The First Round of the Cup, played in June featured a cracking match between Usual Suspects and Mockingbirds, with excellent batting by Sam Robinson and Martha McGrath setting the pace for the Suspects. Mockingbirds had to wait for the 5th Inning before retaliating with a great Home Run by Eoin Lyons. Suspects responded well with superb hitting from Adrian Forster and Dave Killian to take the game 14-12.

The big hitters of Dodder Dynamoes, Marlay Martyrs and Batpak entered in the Second Round, and also comfortably won their Last 16 games, along with Oddsox Red, 1Z Blazers, Loan Homers Barney and Y2 Kegs who received walkovers, and Renegades who had a close 12-8 win over Sluggers.

The Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals were held at Aer Lingus Sports and Athletic Association at Dublin Airport. There the Dynamoes and Martyrs met in a low-scoring affair with Dodder’s 9 players managing to shutout Marlay to take the game 4-0, before a comfortable 14-4 victory over Oddsox Red. In the other half of the draw, Loan Homers Barney chalked up wins over Slammers and Renegades to reach the Final.

The Cup Final was won by Dodder Dynamoes for the second year in-a-row with an relatively easy 19-5 win over Loan Homers Barney.

Plate Report

The Plate Renegades 2, Shutout 7 and Kiely’s Kegs had an easy time reaching the Semi-Finals, although the Kegs were pushed all the way by All Sinners who had reached their first ever Quarter-Final. The Kegs then smashed the Bray Allsorts 97 28-11 with some excellent batting and very aggressive base running, and in the other Semi-Final Renegades 2 beat Shutout 7.

The Final, then, was between two well-matched teams, who went to the 11th inning before Kiely’s Kegs won out 18-17 with their superior hitting and possible experience giving them the title after the two teams traded runs and home runs for hours.

Greystones U13 Blitz – 17 May 2008

The Greystones Blitz was a development Tournament with new rules were brought in for the year, including stealing bases once the pitch had crossed home plate, but no stealing home. It took some time for the players to get used to the new rules, but they enjoyed them once they got into the swing of it. Kerry returned with most of their players which made them the team to beat over the past few seasons, becoming the first team to qualify for the Final after winning all four Round-Robin games. Cork Druids won close games to join them in the Final, while ClonCavan Cardinals, a team made up for the day by players from Clondalkin and Cavan played well despite only being together for the day. Greystones Mariners fielded two teams, and were involved in a number of close games but couldn’t close them out, leaving bases loaded on a number of occasions.[1]

An All-Munster Final was always going to be a high-tempo affair, and so it proved to be, with players totally focused and a collision at home plate requiring a ten-minute injury time-out showing the commitment of both teams. Kerry Red Sox, however, were to prove the better team, finding the hits to defeat a gallant Cork side.[1]
