History

____________________________________________________________

The IAFL-1 Conference was created as a second level in 2013, following on from the successful introduction of the 8-man Development League in 2008. It was decided for the 2013 season that teams in the Development League were ready for full 11-a-side football. The first IAFL-1 Bowl was played the following year.

North Kildare reapers won the first title in 2013 on head-to-head over Dublin Dragons and Waterford Wolves [2] . All three were promoted to the Shamrock Bowl Conference for the following year. The First IAFL-1 Bowl was held in 2014 between UCD and Cork Admirals who had been demoted from the Shamrock Bowl Conference the previous year for forfeiting fixtures. UCD won the encounter handsomely by a score of 40-0 [3]. The Cork Admirals would be on the losing side again in 2015, going down 13-12 to Waterford Wolves in an all-Munster Bowl.[4]

Cork finally got their hands on the trophy in 2016, and automatic promotion, defeating the Belfast Trojans second team 38-7 [8] . In 2017 the Louth Mavericks won the Bowl and the coveted place in the Shamrock Bowl Conference, defeating Craigavon Cowboys 23-18.[12]

For the 2018 season IAFL1 & IAFL 2 were merged, creating an 11-team IAFL 1. Donegal Derry Vipers won the Northern Division, and Wexford Eagles the Southern Division, however, it was West Dublin Rhinos, one of the older teams in Ireland, who won the Bowl, 16-14 over one of the first teams to be formeed, the Craigavon Cowboys.[13][14]
