Report

Following the closure of the Dundalk Ice Dome in 2010, there was no regular Ice Time for the Irish Ice Hockey League, and the league ceased operations.

However, limited ice time was available at the Ice Bowl in Dundonald, Northern Ireland, which allowed for a series of Challenge Cups to be played.

On the 25th May 2014, the “History of Ice Hockey in Northern Ireland” Facebook group sponsored a Challenge Cup between the Junior Belfast Giants Under 20 team and the local NI Tridents at Dundonald Ice Bowl, keeping the sport alive in Ireland, 4 years after the Irish Ice Hockey League had shut down die to the closure of the Dundalk Ice Dome.

The Belfast Giants Junior team, which was competing at the time in the Scottish Under 20 League won on this occasion.

For the 2015-16 season, three Republic of Ireland based teams – the Celtic Clovers & Flying Ducks from Dublin and the Latvian Hawks from Dundalk – competed for the Pat Quinn Cup – named after “The Big Irishman” who played in the National Hockey League in North America.

The Latvian Hawks went through the regular season unbeaten, dropping only one point in a draw with Celtic Clovers White.

In 2016 the Dundonald Ice Bowl became available once again for a full season of Ice Hockey, and the Cross Border Cup was born, featuring teams from both North & South of the border.
