In 2006 the National Football League (USA) started a Youth Flag Football program aimed at developing the sport in Ireland and the United Kingdom. This was part of the NFL International Series which started with Regular Season NFL games in London in 2007, and the first community in Ireland to receive an NFL Flag Football program was Knocknaheeny-Hollyhill in Cork, which Special Justice Project Director and Cork city councillor Tony Fitzgerald warmly accepted.
The home-town team, Cork Admirals also developed a working relationship with the NFL and NFL players Association and the NFL Youth Football Fund, a 501 (c) non-profit foundation, which supports the game at youth level promotes positive youth development.
