While preparing to enter the Irish American Football League in 1989 the Antrim Bulldogs (also known as the A26 Bulldogs) played a series of Friendly and Exhibition matches against other AFAI teams in 1988. During May they lost 39-2 to Belfast Blitzers, then 46-0 to Dublin Tornadoes, 22-8 in July versus Labatt Spartans from Belfast before they were due to play Dublin Tornadoes again at the Birr Vintage Festival in Co. Offaly. The Festival season finished up at Newtownards where Antrim Bulldogs and Coleraine Chieftains served up a cracker of a Final at a Tournament sponsored by Labatts Brewery that also included Labatt Spartans (Belfast).
