About the PIFL / IPFL

The Professional Indoor Football League was the first to challenge the legal status of the Arena Football League as the copyright owner to the Arena Football Rules & Name.

The Arena Football League had copyrighted the name Arena Football and Indoor Football, and also 8-v-8 Indoor or Arena Football Rules in 1987. However, in 1997 the PIFL set up in opposition to it, playing mainly in smaller markets of 12,000 or less. THE AFL took it gto court, and lost, the Judge ruling only the Rebound Nets either side of the goalposts were AFL copyrighted, the rest was Football, which had already existed, in some form or another, whether Indoor, or 8v8. [Reference: 5-6]

The League was based in smaller cities and Arenas, throughout the United States, but primarily in the West and South, with teams also in the Midwest and Northeast.

About Arena / Indoor Football

Indoor (also known as Arena) Football plays an 8 v 8 version of American Football on a converted Ice Hockey Rink 50-yards long with 2 10 -yard endzones. Teams have 5 downs (attempts) to score or the ball is turned over – 3 of which must be passing plays. It is therefore a higher scoring game than standard 11 v 11 American Football. The main difference between Arena Football and Indoor Football is that there is no rebound net either side of the goalposts in Indoor Football. Arena Football rules allow the ball stay in play when it comas back off the rebound nets.
