Report

Craigavon Cowboys finished 10th out of 24 teams in the Flagging New Year III European Regional Flag Football Tournment, held in Toryglen Regional Football Centre in Glasgow, Scotland from 20-21 January 2018. The Cowboys started Group A on Saturday with a 20-19 win over Carnegie Flag football, from Fife in Scotland, before tying 20-20 with the Reckless Russians National Team. They then defeated Newcastle Blackhawks 34-6 before losing 16-34 to Baker Street Buttonhookers, two English teams. Their final Group match saw the Cowboys lose 0-20 to the top Scottish team, Grangemouth Broncos, meaning a 2-2-1 (Wins-Losses-Ties) Group record, and a place in the 9th-16th Quarter-Finals. There they won 26-12 against Coventry Cougars from the Midlands in England, and 13-0 over Victoria Park Panthers, another English team. Craigavon Cowboys final match, however, ebnded in anarrow 12-13 loss to Yorkshire, England, team the Sheffield Giants, leaving the Cowboys 10th out of 24 teams.

About Flagging New Year

Flagging New Year is an Unofficial Regional European Flag Football Tournament, held in Glasgow, Scotland in January. Featuring 24 top teams from North West Europe, in 2018 there were 7 Scottish Teams, 6 English, 1 Irish, and teams from Germany, Netherlands, Denmark, Sweden as well as the Dutch and Russian National teams. The Format wa 4 Groups of 6, followed by 1st-8th (1st and second placed teams in each group), 9th-16th (3rd and fourth placed teams in each group), 17th-20th (fifth placed teams) and 21st-24th (sixthbplaced teams) Place Playoffs in three Rounds (top 2 Divisions) and two Rounds (Divisions 3 and 4)

About Flag Football

Flag Football is a non-contact version of American Football whereby teams (usually of 5) play on a smaller field (50 yards with two 10 yard endzones), using Flags tied around their waist which must be pulled of by the tackler. The aim as in American Football is to pass or run the ball into the opposition endzone, within a specified number of downs (attempts) – teams have four downs in which to reach the Halfway line or two lines close to either endzone, or the ball is turned over to the opposition. On completing either a touchdown (reaching the endzone) or one of the first down markers (ie the Halfway line or one of the other two lines) the down count starts at one again. A Touchdown is worth 6 points, and a conversion (which must be passed into the endzone) is worth one or two points depending on whether the scoring team opts to start from the 5 yard line or 20 yard line. There is no kicking, although in Irish Flag Football in the 1990s there was kicking and seven player teams. Teams are mixed (coed).
