Report

The 1992 Carlsberg Irish Ice Hockey League featured the Dublin flyers for the first time, who along with the Coleraine Jets were the only teams not based at the Dundonald Olympic Ice Rink. Fuel Services Oilers were the defending champions, and all of the Northern Ireland teams could boast semi-pro Canadian players on their roster. The Dublin Flyers had a very fit 55-year-old Japanese Businessman to call upon for experience, while all the other players in the Dublin team learnt what they could from watching TV.

The flyers had done badly in a few friendlies with Northern teams the previous season and not much was expected of them but were 6-1 up in the first period against the Belfast Panthers in their first match before the Panthers knew what hit them, and drew with Fuel Services Oilers, the defending champions, in their second match.

Report

Week 1 (21 September 2019): Dundalk Warriors 7 Kilkenny City Storm 4

Dundalk were made to fight for the win against Kilkenny, with three quick goals in the final minutes of the 3rd period securing victory. Kilkenny had taken an early lead but Dundalk hit two goals to take a one goal advantage at the end of the 2st period. Kilkenny upped the tempo in the second period, as the the Warriors defense struggled to keep up with the dump and chase tactics of the Storm. It was level at 3-3 at the end of the second. Dundalk restored their advantage early in the third, but Kilkenny hit an equaliser not long afterwards. Kilkenny ran out of steam in the final 10 minutes, and Dundalk’s positioning was used to their advantage as they hit the three quick goals for the win. [2-3]

Week 2 (7 October 2019): NI Tridents A 0 Dundalk Latvian Hawks 2

An action packed game full of penalties and chances saw the teams trade shots until late in the first period when the Hawks managed to put one past the screened Tridents goalie. In the second period the Tridents threw everything at the Hawks in search of the equaliser but could not get past the Hawks goalie. The Third period saw tempers frayed with a whole lot of penalties resulting, which the Hawks took advantage of, wrapping the game up with a second goal. [6]

Week 3 (19 October 2019): Kilkenny City Storm 3 NI Tridents 0

A heavy hitting game saw Kilkenny spend a combined total of 20 minutes in the penalty box, however, the Tridents couldn’t capitalise, and the Storm ran out 3-0 winners. [7]

Week 4 (26 October 2019): Dundalk Latvian Hawks 1 Dundalk Warriors 2

It was rough, tough game between the two Dundalk based sides, with teams matching each other until late in the second period, when the Hawks scored a nice slapshot from the redline. In the 3rd period the Warriors up the pace, knowing they needed shots on target. Warriors golaie got a nice assist, setting up Kenny Redmond, who deked left, then right, and equalised with a nice tuck in between the post and the Hawks goalie. In the Final Period, the desperate Warriors managed to keep the Hawks at bay as they kept shots coming from every angle. With a crimmage in front of the Hawks goal, Michael Collins managed to tip one in the back door to give the Warriors a 2-1 win. [8]
