The first Hurlacrosse International Rules Hurling v Lacrosse match took place in 2009 in Queen’s University Belfast between the QUB Hurling and Lacrosse Clubs. With a vague set of rules, the match finished 5-5 with a last minute equaliser for the Hurlers.

In 2017 the Darmstadt GAA and Lacrosse Clubs in Germany started a biannual series with the first set of rules drawn up. The first match finished with a Darmstadt Demons Lacrosse team win of 33 points to 31 (3pts for a goal; 1 for a point).

In 2018 the first Hurlacrosse match was organised in North America, between the GAA Club based in Orange County, California and a Team Eire (Irish-American Lacrosse players).

Dublin Bay Prawns Irish Lacrosse League Champions 2015

[9]

Dublin Bay Prawns ILL Champions 2015

Dublin Bay Prawns won the 2015 Irish Lacrosse League, winning all four regular season matches, before defeating UCD 8-4 in the Final, making up for a loss to the students in the Newtownards Cup Final. The League was played in a single round-robin format over 5 Game Days from January to March, each hosted by one of the clubs, with a Finals Day in April.

Game Day 1 (Host: NUI Galway) 31 January 2015

Galway 7 Dublin Bay Prawns 9 – Dublin Bay Prawns opened the 2015 ILL against hosts NUI Galway, with a close victory. Galway, boosted by the return of Ryan Dolan, had jumped out to a two-goal lead before the Prawns finally caught up and took the lead early in the second half with Cillian Murphy and Martin Scanlon combining. It was a lead they wouldn’t give up and they ran out 9-7 winners.[3]

Dublin Avengers 18 Queens University Belfast 1 – Queens University made their return to the league after an absence of three years in the second match of the day, and their inexperience told, Chris Clarkson their only scorer in a 18-1 defeat which left Dublin Avengers top of the table. Jake Morris, Mike Kennedy and James Nolan each netted four for the Avengers, as Drew Wichmann top-scored on six goals.[3]

Game Day 2 (Host: Dublin Bay Prawns) 14 February 2015

Dublin Bay Prawns 5 UCD 4 – Game Day 2 opened with hosts Prawns seeking revenge for their defeat in the Newtownards Cup Final to UCD, and they made their intentions clear, scoring from the opening face-off through Tadhg Bolger with an outside shot. They would keep the tempo up through the remainder of the first half, going in 4-1 up at half time. UCD responded early in the second half, with Ciaran Boylan continuing his Indoor Lacrosse form, pulling a goal back, before Sean O’Shaughnessy levelled the scores. The Prawns piled on the pressure towards the end, finally breaking through the UCD defence when Mike Colgan found the winner.[4]

NUI Galway 16 Queens University Belfast 1 – The second match of the day saw Queens on the wrong end of another thrashing, Gavin Donaldson their only scorer as Galway scored nine goals in the fourth quarter to finish out easy 16-1 winners. Stephen Lee-Cheong, Dylan Landy, Daniel Hynes and Jake Hobby Royle scoring three each for the westerners. [4]

Game Day 3 (Host: NUI Galway) 28 February 2015

NUI Galway 2 UCD 13 – The only match of the third Game Day saw UCD secure a surprisingly easy win over hosts NUI Galway. Canadian Josh Appel opened the scoring early for UCD and they never looked back, Ciaran Boylan netting 5 goals and Sean O’Shaughnessy four as UCD finished off 13-2 winners. Galway appeared to totally switch off in the second half as UCD scored eight without reply. [5]

Dublin Avengers scr. Dublin Bay Prawns w/o – Dublin Avengers forfeited their match with Dublin Bay Prawns,

Game Day 4 (Host: UCD) 7 March 2015

UCD 8 Queens University Belfast 3 – Hosts UCD won 8-3 against a much-improved Queens side to open the fourth Game Day. UCD opened the scoring, before Queens equalised late in the first quarter through Donaldson, giving them hope of their first points, with UCD’s Ciaran Boylan unusually subdued. There was little in the way of offense in the first half with UCD leading 3-1 at half-time. UCD’s third goal late in the second quarter composed them, however, and they rattled off three in the first ten minutes of the third. Aidan Kelly and the top-scoring Sean O’Shaughnessy finishing off the Queens challenge in the final quarter.[6]

Dublin Avengers 9 NUI Galway 5 – The second match of the day saw Dublin Avengers and NUI Galway face-off in what would be a crucial match for both teams, as defeat would rule either of them out of the Final. Avengers struck first with two early goals by Mike Kennedy before Galway equalised, Stephen Lee-Cheong netting a brace of his own. Dublin Avengers threw on some Rookies and this fresh blood appeared to pay off, with them going in 4-2 up at half-time. Drew Wichmann scored three goals in the second half, and Mike Kennedy two, to secure the win for Dublin. NUI Galway responded well, however, with two more goals for Lee-Cheong and one for Ryan Doran securing a Losing Bonus Point.[6]

Game Day 5 (Host: Queens University Belfast) 28 March 2015

Queens University Belfast 2 Dublin Bay Prawns 11 – The final Game Day began with Queens putting up a much improved performance in an 11-2 defeat to Regular Season winners, Dublin Bay. While the margin was high it was still a vast improvement on their first two matches, with Gavin Donaldson again scoring for them. Cillian Murphy was the outstanding player for the Prawns, scoring 6 goals.[7]

UCD 12 Dublin Avengers 2 – The final match-up of the regular season saw Dublin Avengers and UCD go head-to-head for the second spot in the final. UCD raced into an early lead against an Avengers squad missing some key players. Ciaran Boylan would score five on the day for UCD, and Cian Rushe four as UCD ran out 12-2 winners, securing a place in the final against Dublin Bay Prawns.[7]

Game Day 6 (Finals Day) (Host: Dublin Avengers) 11 April 2015

3rd Place

Dublin Avengers 13 NUI Galway 9 – Hosts for the finals day, Dublin Avengers, faced off in the third-place playoff against a Galway side they had narrowly beaten in the regular season. Dublin scored three goals before Stephen Lee-Cheong pulled one back, that however, appeared to spur the Avengers on and they would add another six to go in 9-2 leaders at half-time. The second half was more balanced, with the teams trading goals as Dublin ran out 13-9 winners. Rookies would again be on the scoreboard for the Avengers, auguring well for the future.[8]

Final

Dublin Bay Prawns 8 UCD 4 – UCD took early advantage of a man-up situation to take the lead through Ciaran Boylan against Dublin Bay, however the Prawns quickly equalised through Paul Murran, before taking the lead through their own man-up situation. That would be how it would stay for 31 minutes before a fluke goal by Martin Scanlon caught the UCD goalie off-guard just before half-time. This steadied the Prawns and goals scored on quick breaks early in the third saw them build on their lead through Cillian Murphy and Gareth Kavanagh.

Cillian Murphy added his second, the goal of the game, as the third quarter ended – another quick break from the Prawns own half, with quick exchange of passes, before netting. The pattern of goals scored at the beginning and end of halves continued as Dexter Blanc and Murphy scored late in the game to give the Prawns a comfortable seven-goal lead. Boylan scored three late consolation goals for UCD as they battled to the end, however, it was not enough as Dublin Bay Prawns won the ILL Final 8-4 to add to their Regular Season Championship. [8]
