Recap
Cathal Brugha from Belfast won the Irish Water Polo Association U19 National Cup in 1997 by defeating North Dublin 11-2 in the Final. The Cup was hosted in Claremorris, Co. Mayo for the first time, and the home team claimed the first ever win by a Connacht team at this level in Water Polo with a 7-5 victory over Grads, also of Belfast, in their Final Group B match.
Marian, from Dublin, won a tightly contested Group A ahead of Dublin’s Glenalbyn and Belfast’s Clonard. Group B was a four team Group with winners Cathal Brugha and runners-up North Dublin qualifying for the Semi-Finals ahead of Claremorris and Grads. Group C saw two runaway wins for St. Vincent’s of Glasnevin in Dublin, qualifying ahead of Belfast’s Setanta and Galway’s Corrib.
The Knockout Rounds showed Cathal Brugha to be well-deserving victors with a 14-5 defeat of Marian in the Semi-Finals and an 11-2 triumph in the Final versus North Dublin. North Dublin had knocked out St. Vincent’s 7-5 in an all-Northside Dublin match in the other Semi-Final.
