Two important interceptions in the 4th Quarter by S Wright III (who returned the ball 46 yards for a Touchdown and a 33-23 Birmingham lead with 3:03 left in the game) and another by C McFarland (with only 0:28 seconds left on the clock and Birmingham in a slender 33-30 lead) sealed a win for the Birmingham Stallions in the USFL Championship Game over the Phhiladelphia Stars.
Birmingham had taken a 10-3 lead in the 1st Quarter through a 36yd B Scarborough Rushing Touchdown, and a 20-9 lead at half time when M Williams caught a TD pass from J Smith after Philadelphia Stars had scored through J Suell’s 25 yd TD Pass from C Cookus.
The only score in the third quarter was another Cookus to Suell passing TD, and in the 4th Quarter Philadelphia went ahead for the first time after C Cookus found D Gray for the go-ahead TD score.
Birmigham answered through B Bolden’s 8yd Touchdown Pass from A McGough before S Wright III’s magnificent 46yd pick six. Philadelphia managed to pull within 3 points when C Rowland caught a 12yd TD Pass from K Costello, but C McFarland’s timely interception with 28 seconds left on the Philadelphia 27yard line sealed the game and the first USFL Championship Game since 1985 for Birmingham Stallions.
