Recap
Rock Island Independents defeated Muncie Flyers 45-0 in the openiing weekend of the 1920 American Professional Football Association season. The Independents’ star player was Wyman, who scored on a blocked punt return and and also recovered a punt in the endzone, both in the first quarter. His big play, however, was an 86 yard kickoff return in the second quarter.
Ursella scored on a 7 yard run, as well as kicking a Drop Kick Field Goal and four extra points as Rock Island went 31-0 up at halftime. Resting players for the second half they scored two further touchdowns – Nicholls and Kuehl both rushing for short-yardage scores.
After the game other teams cancelled their games with Muncie, thinking they were not good enough to play at this level, and the team dispersed to other State level teams in the Indiana area. They were to reform late in the season, however, playing three games versus Indiana opposition.
