International Friendly Coventry Jets v Ireland Report

Ireland put in one of their best performances in years against the Coventry Jets, ranked among the top teams in Europe, and the current British Division 1A Champions. The Jets roster included several British Internationals and players with Professional experience.

Erin Wagner was named Team Ireland MVP, picking up some first downs on offense and making some great tackles on defense. Former NFL Europe star Mark Cohen scored two touchdowns, and made several first down receptions, proving the game-winner for Coventry. Other Jets scorers were Running Back Anthony Perkins and Coventry’s 2006 MVP Jeremy Simms.

Perkins made a number of first down runs in the first quarter before scoring the opening touchdown midway through the quarter. Team Ireland responded with an 80-yard drive that got them to the 6-yard line with Simon Mackey, Chris Flynn & Erin Wagner picking up first downs, however, the Jets defense managed to keep Ireland out of the endzone.

The Jets added two touchdowns in the second quarter, one set up by a spectacular sideline catch inside the 5-yard line by Mark Cohen, and the other was a reception from Cohen from QB Tim Spaull after both he and Irish cornerback Willie Coyne both came down with their hands on the ball in the endzone. The Irish had another long drive behind QB Andrew Dennehy in the second quarter but were stopped on fourth down.

The Irish defense stepped up in the second half, with several tackles on the Coventry offense for a loss of yardage, James Kay, Chris Weir, Erin Wagner, Glen Carr and Kenny Hudson all making tackles. The Jets, however, got the ball within scoring range after recovering a fumble. Roxss McCooey came close to making an interception for Ireland, but the Jets scored a few plays later.

Ireland appeared to get stronger as the gamde wore on, and the Jets kept their star players, Cohen, Simms, and defensive Captain Adrian Newey on the field for the fourth quarter. Simon Buggle was now Ireland Quarterback, and he ut together a drive which finished with a scoring run inside from Sam Hodgins on a first-and-goal. Team Ireland also forced a fumble which was recovered by Darragh Farrell for the the turnover.

The Jets got their final TD in the fourth quarter, when QB Tim Spaull who also played on the GB Lions International team, threw a long touchdown pass to Jeremy Simms. Ireland forced another turnover following this as Willie Coyne recovered a muffed punt and sprinted into the endzone for an apparent score, however, the referees ruled that the punter never had full possession of the ball so it couldn’t be advanced. Ireland, however, regained possession. [References: 4]

Irish International Club Friendly Report

On the 20th March 2006 Dublin City Marshalls hosted the Derby Braves of the British Collegiate American Football League and secured the best result by an Irish team against British opposition for many years with a narrow 20-16 victory.

Report

The International scene in American Football in 1998 saw Ireland lose heavily, 34-6 to Wales.

The American Football Association of Ireland Senior League was a 5-team League, with new team Dublin tigers winning the League on Points scored from Carrickfergus Knights, after the two teams tied both games with each other and won all the rest. They met again in the Shamrock Bowl, after the Tigers had defeated Craigavon Cowboys 30-0 and the Knights had won 40-0 against Greystones Rebels in the semi-finals. The shamrock Bowl was again a close affair as had been promised given the even match-ups between the two sides all year, with the Carrickfergus Knights running out 22-14 victors.

Ballymena Wolfhounds 8-a-side Youth Kitted team fared better than their Senior International counterparts, winning 22-6 on the road against Doncaster Wildcats from Yorkshire in England.

There was also a 7-a-side Charity blitz in the grounds of Queens University, where Carrickfergus Knights finished out on top, with two wins against the host Broncos and new team Belfast Lasers, playing in their first ever tournament.

In Flag Football, the Drimnagh Cycos lost the second Anglo-Irish Flag Football Challenge 24-12 to the Europa Eagles in Leicester.

In the Irish Flag Football League (Dublin Area), the Pirates beat the Greystones Rebels 14-12 in a close match.

Report

Dublin rebels won the Charleroi Trophy, the unofficial West European Championship for purely amateur leagues, beating Celtes de Mitry (French Amateur Division) 8-6 and Charleroi Cougars (Belgium) 12-0.

The Irish American Football League was renamed Division 1, following the introduction of an 8v8 Division 2. Dublin Rebels beat Carrickfergus Knights 24-12 in Shamrock Bowl XVII, with Cork Admirals reaching the playoffs also. The fourth team in the Division were Dublin Dragons, who finished bottom on 1-5.

Division 2 was split into two sections: the main Division 2 which featured smaller teams not in Division 1, and was won by Belfast Bulls with a 3-2 Wins-Losses record; and Division 1 teams, where players not getting their game in Division 1 could play, which finished with both Cork Admirals and Carrickfergus Knights undefeated.

The Anglo-Irish Flag Football Classic was won by Leicester Europa Eagles, who defeated Ireland’s Drimnagh Cycos 12-6.

About

The 2003-04 season was the 19th in Irish American Football history, including both the formative 1985-86 season and the 2000-01 season where only one International match was played.

There were four teams in the Irish American Football League, which was now re-christened Division 1, following the introduction of an 8v8 Division 2, featuring smaller teams, as well as matches against Division 1 teams (players not getting their game in Division 1 would have played in these matches).

There were also International Tournaments in both American Football (Charleroi Trophy) and Flag Football (Anglo-Irish Flag Football Challenge)
