IAFL Shamrock Bowl Conference 2019 [Reference: 20]

The Irish American Football League played its first Shamrock Bowl in 1986, and by 2013 there were enough teams playing 11-man contact football to necessitate a Second Tier – the IAFL-1 Conference, with the Top Tier named the Shamrock Bowl conference.

The SBC North Division in 2013 was won by Belfast Trojans on a perfect 8-0 record, and they would meet SBC North runners-up  Dublin Rebels in Shamrock Bowl XVII after the Rebels had beaten SBC South Champions UL Vikings in the Playoffs. The Trojans would win their second Bowl thrashing the Dublin Rebels 48-18.

In 2014 the Cork Admirals and University College Dublin were relegated for failing to complete fixtures in 2013, and the North Kildare Reapers, Waterford Wolves and Dublin Dragons would be promoted. Belfast Trojans, SBC North Champions would meet SBC South Champions Trinity College Dublin in the Shamrock Bowl, defeating the previously undefeated Trinity College side 7-0 in a game that was played in torrential rain.

The 2015 season would feature the return of UCD to the top ranks as well as the South Dublin Panthers (a reformed Dublin Dragons), while the Waterford Wolves had been relegated. Again Belfast Trojans and TCD would win their Divisions and meet in the Shamrock Bowl, where the Trojans completed a perfect season, winning 28-14.

The West Dublin Rhinos would drop down to the IAFL-1 for 2016, as the Rebels won back the title, defeating the Belfast Trojans 28-14 and ending the Trojans Bowl-winning streak at four.

The Cork Admirals would make a return to the SBC in 2017 replacing the Craigavon Cowboys who were relegated, as the Carrickfergus Knights won the SBC North Division title, appearing in their first Shamrock Bowl since 2004, but were unable to dethrone the repeating Dublin Rebels, who beat them 12-6 in a close encounter.

The Louth Mavericks would win the IAFL-1 Bowl in 2017 thus gaining promotion, while the North Kildare Reapers would merge with the South Kildare Soldiers, creating the Cill Dara Crusaders who would play in the IAFL-1 in 2018.

Report

The first American Football game played in Ireland between two Irish sides was in Omagh, Co. Tyrone on 12 May 1985, between the Tyrone Tornadoes and Coleraine Chieftains. It was played under 9-Man National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rules, but was unkitted. [1][2]

There was a Northern Ireland American Football Association at this time, with plans for a league involving the two teams, and the Ballymena Wolfhounds and Belfast Blitzers. [2]

Trim Bulldogs had a more successful second season in the DV8 Development League, winning their first matches (20-0 & 6-0 against the Dublin Dragons 2nds and 21-14 against Tullamore Phoenix 2nds) although they would have been disappointed to have lost two close matches against neighbours and rivals Drogheda Lightning.

Report

The Trim Bulldogs were set up by Californian Garland Drake in Trim, Co. Meath in september 2010 and entered the DV8 Development League in 2011.

The Trim Bulldogs had a difficult year in the DV8 Development League, losing all their matches heavily. The League was an 8-a-side League and was set up with two aims – Allowing teams which have been newly set up and building their player/equipment levels to play kitted American Football, and to enable larger IAFL teams to field 2nd teams.

The Bulldogs managed one Touchdown, however, against Drogheda Lightning. They also played matches against other Regional Leinster team, Tullamore Phoenix, as well as games against 2nds teams of more established IAFL teams Dublin Dragons and Craigavon Cowboys.

Report

The University of Limerick Vikings raced out of the blocks in 2011, defeating the Dublin Rebels in a close game as well as crushing UCD, Cork Admirals & Carrickfergus Knights in big wins of close to 40+ points or more. A series of walkovers against IAFL South rivals then ensued which left them in a state of match rustiness for the playoffs where they eventually lost by a point to the Dublin Rebels.

Belfast Trojans Shamrock Bowl XXXIII Winners

Report

The Belfast Trojans won their fifth Shamrock Bowl 24-10 over surprise-packet South Dublin Panthers, who were appearing in their first Shamrock Bowl.

The Trojans had finished second in League play, only losing to the Cork Admirals, who had only drawn one game, winning all the rest before their shock defeat to the Panthers in the Semi-Finals. University College Dublin also qualified for the Semi-Finals with a 5-2-1 record.

At the other end of the table the University of Limerick Vikings, Dublin Rebels and Belfast Knights struggled by their usually high standards, and ended up with losing records along with West Dublin Rhinos. Belfast Knights appear to have suffered a dip in form since moving from Carrickfergus, and are looking at relegation following a bottom-of-the-table finish.

The season belonged to the Belfast Trojans, however, and surprise package South Dublin Panthers, who could be pleased with their best ever showing. The Belfast Trojans scored immediately in the Shamrock Bowl, Tom Morris returning the opening kickoff 100 yards to the endzone. They added another Touchdown from Jona Siri and a Field Goal from Ben sloan to take what seemed like an unassailable lead into halftime as the Panthers failed to get going. They came out fighting in the second half with a Touchdown of their own and a huge 49-yard Field Goal from Keith Lally to make it a one score game, but the Trojans held on and put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter with Quarterback James McKelvey scoring on one of his trademark QB sneaks.

Report

The South Dublin Panthers first foray into competitive Football since their reformation and rebranding from Dublin Dragons was a difficult one, as they lost their first four games, although they ended up with an even 5-5 record thanks to receiving five walkovers during the rest of the season.

Season Report

The University of Limerick Vikings repeated as Shamrock Bowl Champions, defeating the Dublin Rebels 14-12 with a last-minute blocked Field Goal at the Cork Institute of Technology, thus gaining revenge for defeat in Week 13, their only loss of the season.

The season opened with comfortable wins over the two Belfast sides and the Tallaght Outlaws before two games with the Cork Admirals, their Munster rivals giving them the closest test so far in 2008 by putting up 25 points against the Vikings in Cork, but the UL side managed their best offensive performance of the year by scoring 34.

They followed this by lighting up the scoreboard in an emphatic 92-0 win over Tallaght Outlaws, before crashing back down to earth with a heavy 32-14 loss to the Dublin Rebels, which proved to be their only loss of the season. The Vikings regrouped and won their next two games in style, including the Semi-Final over the IAFL North Division Champions, Belfast Trojans.

Having won the IAFL South Division, and dispatched the IAFL North Division Champions in the Semi-Finals, they then faced the IAFL Central Division Champions for the second time that season, in what was an extremely close Final. They Vikings led 14-3 at half-time thanks to a Rushing Touchdown from MVP Adrian Garvey and an Interception Return for Touchdown by Darragh O’Callaghan before a second-half comeback by the Rebels ended with the blocked Field Goal.
