Report

Each of the National Football League teams played a game in Preseason 1942 against either the College All-Stars (0-2 Wins-Losses), Western Army All-Stars (2-3), or Eastern Army All-Stars (2-1). The NFL teams record read 6-4 Wins Losses. Playing the NFL teams before heading over to Europe or the Pacific just before entering World War II must have given the Soldiers a huge morale boost.

Some of these games were played at Major Stadiums such as Soldiers Field in Chicago (home of the Bears, 101,000 capacity crowd attended) or cities without Major League Pro Teams, such as Syracuse (NY), Baltimore (Maryland), Denver (Colorado), Los Angeles (California), Boston (Massachusetts) and Milwaukee (Wisconsin).

Semi-Finals, Saturday, 26 August 2004, Charleroi, Belgium

Dublin Rebels 8 Chevaliers d’Orleans 24 – The Dublin Rebels came into the game looking for a three-in-a-row in the Charleroi Trophy in Belgium, having won the Tournament in 2002 and 2003. Orleans got off to a flyer, scoring a 59 yard Touchdown Pass on their opening possession. The Rebels almost responded immediately but on their first drive fumbled the ball on the Chevaliers two yard line. A couple of plays later the Rebelsdefense almost tackled the Orleans Running Back in the end-zone for a safety but it was marked at the one yard line. The Knights (Chevaliers) scored a 34-yard TD shortly after haltime. In an attempt to get back into the game Rebels Quarterback fired off passes to Conor Ryan, Carl Faichney and Simon Mackey but to no avail. Later in the third quarter Orleans stretched their lead with a 43 yard TD Pass. The Rebels finally responded with a TD in the fourth quarter when Brian Dennehy ran in from 12 yards out, but it was too little too late, and the French side added a 50 yard Interception Return to book their place in the Final.

Report

Belfast Blitzers tore through the Irish American Football League in 1987, scoring 333 points to 0 in their first six games including a 92-0 victory over the East Side Jets on opening day. In their seventh game the Belfast Tennents Giants finally put some points on the board against the Blitzers with a fourth quarter Field Goal, but the Blitzers still ran out 38-3 winners.

They lost their next game to deadly rivals the Dublin Celts 14-26, but wrapped up the Mourne Conference title with two wins against Dublin Tornadoes and Carrickfergus Cougars. A shock loss to the Craigavon Cowboys meant yet again they were not in the Shamrock Bowl despite being one of the two best teams all season.
