History

Cavan Comets Baseball Club were established in 2005 and first played in the Baseball Ireland B League in 2010. After three years patience they jumped from a 3-12 record two years running (2011-2012) to a 9-9 record in 2013 and then in 2014 had their best year ever, finishing third in the 9-team league with a winning 10-6 record, making the playoffs for the first time where they were eliminated in the Semi-Final. The 2015 season followed with another playoff run, this time being eliminated in the North Semi-Final.

The following year it was decided to create an Ulster Elite Team to play in the A League featuring the best players from the Cavan Comets, Belfast North Stars and Belfast Buccaneers who wanted to play for this Ulster Red Sox team based in Clones Peace Link Park in Co. Monaghan where Cavan Comets had recently relocated. This had a subsequent impact on the Cavan Comets, coupled with increasing competitiveness in the B League with the addition of new teams Belfast Buccaneers and Ashbourne Giants, and the Comets were out of the playoffs from 2016 to 2020. The Comets were renamed Comets Baseball in 2018 in recognition of their no longer being based in Cavan and still maintained competitiveness, being placed in the B League Upper for 2021.

About Basketball Ireland / Irish Basketball Association Cups

The Irish Basketball Association ran the National Cup for the Top Two Divisions as well as any regional teams that wished to enter in both Men’s and Women’s as well as Junior (Under 19) Cup for both Men and Women as well as a Junior B (U19) Regional Cup for both Men and Women. The Cups were Knockout (single elimination) from the First Round. They were replaced by Super League and Division 1 Cups when the Association rebranded as Basketball Ireland in 2003. The Junior (U19) Cups were replaced by Under 20 and Under 18 Cups. Other Cups included the Irish Wheelchair Basketball Cup and introduced in the late 2010s the National Intermediate Cup Competition (Tier 3).

Report

UCD won the Volleyball Association of Ireland National League Premier Men’s in 2015-16 with 28 points from 12 matches, five ahead of nearest challengers Ballymun Patriots Eagles, with third placed DVC Bravo (Dublin Volleyball Club) a further point back. They went 10-2 in wins-losses, their only losses coming in Week 6 to DVC PM and Week 9 to Ballymun Patriots. NUIG Alliance (National University of Ireland Galway) were relegated after finishing with four points from one win and one overtime loss in their 12 matches, their sole victory coming against Tallaght Rockets in the 13th of 16 weeks. That was not enough to prevent them finishing 4 points behind the Rockets. DVC PM and Ballymun Patriots finished mid-table. Aer Lingus Saints and Garda were promoted from Division 1 for the 2016-17 season, while new team Naas Eagles were formed from the successful Schools programme in the Co. Kildare town. They replaced DVC PM and Ballymun Patriots Eagles in the Premier as each club had only one team in the Premier for the 2016-17 season.
