Report

With the current round of name changes and city moves in the National Football League (NFL) – Oakland Raiders to Las Vegas Raiders, San Diego Chargers to Los Angeles Chargers, St. Louis Rams to Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco 49ers to San Jose (but still called San Francisco), and Washington Redskins renamed Washington Football team – Eirball takes a look at Non-NFL Cities that have had AAA League (2nd Division Minor League) Teams since the World Football League in the 1970s.

The NFL has often looked at where AAA markets have worked, and later put expansion teams in those cities, and has often reused names from those AAA Leagues (e.g. Buffalo Bills, Cincinnati Bengals as well as using the names Seahawks, Panthers, Texans to name but three, although in different cities to the AAA teams of that name).

The most popular cities for AAA teams have been Orlando (6 – World Football League, United States Football League, World League of American Football, XFL, United Football League and Alliance of American Football); Birmingham (5 – WFL, USFL, WLAF, XFL, AAF); Memphis (4 – WFL, USFL, XFL, AAF); and San Antonio (4 – WFL, USFL, WLAF, AAF).

Report

Season Recap

Saskatoon Hilltops won the Canadian Junior Football League in 2019, after winning the Prairie Football Conference and then beating Edmonton Huskies and Edmonton Wildcats in the PFC Playoffs, before winning 51-1 against London Beefeaters in the Inter-Conference Playoffs Semi-Finals and then in a low-scoring Inter-Conference Final, triumphing 11-6 over the Langley Rams.

The defeat in the Final was Langley Rams only loss of the season having gone 10-0 during the regular season in the British Columbia Football Conference, and then defeating Okanagan Sun and Westshore Rebels in the BCFC Playoffs. London Beefeaters had shocked both Hamilton Hurricanes and Windsor AKO Fratmen in the Ontario Football Cnference Playoffs before the big loss to the Hilltops in the Inter-Conference Semi-Final.

The Canadian Junior Football League is the Junior level of Canadian Football, below the CFL (Professional League), CMFL (Canadian Major Football League – Semi-Professional) and U Sport (Canadian University Football). It occupies a level between U Sport and Varsity (School Football).

From 1987 to 1990 in the RSEQ – Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec – University Football League, Bishop’s won twice (1988 and 1990), Queen’s once (1989) and McGill Redmen the other (1987)

The Queen’s University Gaels from Kingston, Ontario, are named after an old name for the Irish – Gaels – and won the RSEQ Championship in 1989 after an unblemished 7-0 regular season record and then two victories in the playoffs.

RSEQ – Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec – is the governing body for all Student Sport in the French-speaking Province of Canada. The University Football League had six teams, playing a 7-game regular season, plus playoffs. McGill University are famour for playing one of the first ever games of American or Canadian Football, when they played Harvard in Massachusetts.

In 1874, Harvard with no opponent in America to play its “Boston Game” against, looked to McGill University in Montreal, which played Rugby. After one game in Harvard which the hosts won 3-0 in the Boston Game, abandoned after 22 minutes due to it being a rout, the following day the teams met under McGill’s Rugby rules, playing out a 0-0 tie.

Harvard liked the idea of a touchdown, as used in McGill’s Rugby Rules, so much they adopted it for their own game and persuaded the Elis of Yale to play against them using the rules in 1875, with Harvard winning 4-0.

RSEQ Football Universitaire Regular Season Results 2019 [Reference: 2]

Report

Montréal won the 2019 RSEQ Quebec University title with a 25-10 triumph over Laval in the Final. They had stuttered towards the end ofthe regular season, losing their last two after winning their first six, which handed the regular season title to Laval, and also home advantage for the playoffs.

They made no mistake, however, once the knockout stages began, and took the title with the win against Laval after a convincing 39-6 defeat of McGill in the Semi-Finals.

About

RSEQ – Réseau du sport étudiant du Québec – is the governing body for all Student Sport in the French-speaking Province of Canada. The University Football League has five teams, playing an 8-game regular season, plus playoffs. McGill University are famour for playing one of the first ever games of American or Canadian Football, when they played Harvard in Massachusetts.

The Origins of American and Canadian Football in Universities
