Recap

Almost all games went to form in the National Division Management Association Youth League in 1989. The top League of Youth Kitted American Football in Britain in 1989 was won by Leicester Panthers 2-0 thanks to a safety versus London Olympians in atrocious weather in November. The Panthers were deserving winners having won all six regular season games and then defeated Fylde Falcons of Blackpool, Lancashire, 50-0 in the Semi-Finals.

Fylde had been lucky to get into the playoffs with their 2-4 record, the same as Northampton Stormbringers and Manchester Spartans, but the Stormbringers appeared to have been excluded from the playoffs due to forfeiting their Week 7 game against Birmingham Bulls, and the Falcons thus won the Head-to-Head tie-breaker with Manchester Spartans whose shock 26-8 victory over the Stormbringers on the Final Week necessitated the three-way tie-breaker. London Olympians (5-1) had defeated Birmingham Bulls (4-2) by a two touchdowns (13-0) in the other Semi-Final. Manchester Allstars finished last although did not discgrace themselves with close losses to Northampton (29-36) and the Spartans (8-16).

Recap

Rhein-Main Rockets won the 1989 United States Air Force in Europe Football Championship with a 37-18 victory over Lakenheath Eagles in the USAFE Championship Game. The Rockets had won the Eifel Division of the Continental Sports Conference by going 8-2, their only defeat coming in Week 3 with a 13-0 loss to Spangdahlen Sabres and Week 5 to Ramstein Rams (17-40). The Rockets then proceeded to win the CSC Semi-Finals 10-7 in overtime versus Sembach Tigers and then upset the Ramstein Rams 26-0 in the CSC Final.

The United Kingdom Sports Conference was a single league in 1989, playing 7 games as opposed to 10 in 1988 and in the Continental Sports Conference in 1989. The Regular season Championship was won by Upper Heyford Skykings with a 7-0 record, but the Lakenheath Eagles, who started 0-3 just got better and better as the season went on, winning their last four Conference Games before defeating Upper Heyford 13-7 in the UKSC Semi-Finals and then the Alconbury Spartans 12-3 in the UKSC Final. They could not however continue the run all the way to the USAFE Championship Game.

Lakenheath Eagles later played an Irish All-Star team in 1991 and Alconbury Spartans and Ramstein Rams had played games in Ireland in the 1950s and 1960s.

Recap

Almost all matches went to form in the 1986 SAFV (Schweizerischer American Football Verband) / FASV (Fédération Suisse de Football Américain / Federazione Svizzera Football Americano) season with Lugano Seagulls topping the Ost (East) Division on 6-0, ahead of Zurich Bay Bandits (4-2), Bienna Jets (2-4) and Muralto Unicorns (0-6). Also in the West Division were Basilisk Mean Machine (2-3-1) and Bülach Giants (0-6). Lugano Seagulls (18-12 versus St. Gallen Raiders) and Zurich Renegades (34-0 versus Bienna Jets – in place of Zurich Bay Bandits) as expected won through to the 1986 Final, where Lugano Seagulls triumphed 9-6 over the Zurich Renegades.

About the 1986 SAFV Season

The 1986 SAFV (Schweizerischer American Football Verband) / FASV (Fédération Suisse de Football Américain / Federazione Svizzera Football Americano) (Swiss American Football Federation in English) season was the first year of the Meisterschaft (Championship) in American Football in Switzerland. The SAFV 1986 featured eight teams split evenly into two Divisions: Ost (East) and West, playing a home and away (Home and Home in American parlance) schedule within their division for six games each followed by Play -Offs with the top two in each division, a 3rd / 4th Place match and the Final. After the season Muralto Unicorns folded but were replaced by three new teams: Aarau Outlaws, Berner Grizzlies and Mendrisio Smugglers to bring the total up to 10 teams.

Tyrolean Raiders (Aut) vs Carlstad Crusaders (Swe)

Report

Sweden’s Carlstad Crusaders were winners of the EFAF-Cup in 2003 having triumphed 28-7 against Austria’s Tyrolean Raiders from Innsbruck in the Final. Tyrolean Raiders had finished top of their three-team Semi-Final Group scoring 50-plus points against both of their opponents (Great Britain’s PA Knights and Switzerland’s Zurich Renegades). The other Semi-Final was won by the Crusasders in a closer fashion, 25-12 versus Denmark’s NFA Monarchs. Carlstad had knocked out Roskilde Kings, also of Denmark in their Group match while the Monarchs had received a walkover from Ukraine’s Kiev Slavs in the other Group B game.

About the EFAF-Cup

The EFAF-Cup (European Federation of American Football Cup) was the second level cup tournament for the Champions of European American Football Leagues between 2003 to 2013 inclusive. In 2003 the entrants were from Innsbruck, Austria (Tyrolean Raiders), Surrey, Great Britain (Personal Assurance Knights), Zurich, Switzerland (Zurich Renegades), Roskilde, Denmark (Rosklide Kings), Avedere, Denmark (NFA Monarchs), Carlstad, Sweden (Carlstad Crusaders) and Kiev, Ukraine (Kiev Slavs). The Groups were aligned geographically West-East (Group A: West; Group B: East) with the Group Winners playing in the EFAF-Cup Final 2003. Group A was round-robin each team playing the other once. Group B was Single-Elimination Semi-Finals and Final (called Group Games and Semi-Finals respectively).

Report

London O’s won the fourth Euro Cup – American Football’s equivalent of Soccer’s UEFA Cup – by defeating Norway’s Oslo Vikings 12-0 in the Euro Cup IV Final in Heysel Stadium, Brussels. The tournament was nearly cancelled, but in the end went ahead with a Northern Division featuring two Norwegian Teams (Oslo and Eidsvoll 1814s) and two Danish teams (Kronborg Knights and Roskilde Kings) and a Central Division where London O’s won 63-2 on aggregate versus Amsterdam Crusaders, who travelled with a depleted squad for their second match in London, which had to be abandoned for safety reasons because the Crusaders were short players.

Report

Aarhus Tigers won Mermaid Bowl XI 28-0 versus Kronborg Knights. It was the Tigers’ second Mermaid Bowl in a row and third overall, leaving them just one behind record-holders Cophenhagen Towers. Aarhus had won all six Regular Season matches in the seven-team National Ligaen, while also competing in the EuroBowl. Kronborg Knights had finished second on 5-1, with Roskilde Kings (4-2) and Odense Swans (3-3) also making the playoffs.

There were a large number of lop-sided victories in the league with all 24 games going according to form, including the playoffs. Perhaps for this reason the National Ligaen was reduced to four teams for 1999-2000, which was to be played over Winter. Both Esbjerg Hurricanes and Vejle Saints were relegated to the 1.Division for the 1999-2000 season while Kronborg Knights folded after three Mermaid Bowl losses in three seasons.

Report

With one team withdrawing from four of the five Divisions and Leagues, there was little competition in the Qualifying Phase, with Stockholm Mean Machine and Marfil Alella Drags receiving a bye into the Quarter-Finals, and the South League’s six matches being superfluous as all three teams that played were guaranteed a Quarter-Final spot. This left Division 1 and 2 to be played to knock out two teams. La Corneuve Flash of France qualified from Division 1 at the expense of British Champions London O’s and Chrysler Vienna Vikings (4-0) and Marche Team Dolphins (2-2) qualified from Division 2 ahead of Bolzano Giants of Italy.

In the Quarter-Finals an All-Italian match-up saw Bergamo Lions progress at the expense of Marche Team Dolphins, and an All-Austrian tie was a win for Chrysler Vienna Vikings by a single point versus Tyrolean Raiders. The previous weekend Sweden’s Stockholm Mean Machine had triumphed 72-52 in a high-scoring thriller at Spain’s Marfil Alella Drags and La Corneuve Flash of France shutout Seaside Vipers of Switzerland 62-0.

The Semi-Finals were a lot closer as Bergamo Lions defeated La Corneuve Flash 28-12 and Chrysler Vienna Vikings defeated Stockholm Mean Machine 23-14. Eurobowl XV was a repeat victory for Bergamo Lions as they defeated Chrysler Vienna Vikings 28-11.

Report

Champions League North Region 1 was won by Stockholm Mean Machine of Sweden with a 4-0 record and Bergamo Lions also went 4-0 in winning the Champions League South Region 7. Both of those teams were seeded to the Eurobowl Semi-Finals and Champions League Final.

Eurobowl Regions 2, 3 and 5 were all won with two victories by Vienna Vikings (Austria), Aix-en-Provence Argonautes (France) and Cologne Crocodiles (Germany), but Region 6 was tougher for the winner Asnieres Molosses of France who had to rely on points differential to see off Badelona Drags of Spain.

The Wild-Cards saw Vienna Vikings defeat Aix-en-Provence Argonautes 48-28 and Cologne Crocodiles win 49-27 against Asnieres Molosses. Hamburg Blue Devils and Braunschweig Lions (1999 Runners-Up and Eurobowl Champions) entered at the Quarter-Final stage, defeating Vienna Vikings 43-16 and losing to Cologne Crocodiles (24-15) respectively.

Champions League North and South Group winners entered at the Semi-Final stage where Stockholm Mean Machine went down 12-35 to Hamburg Blue Devils and Bergamo Lions defeated Cologne Crocodiles 62-56 in Overtime in a close high-scoring encounter.

The Eurobowl XIV 2000 Final was thus between Italy’s Bergamo Lions and Germany’s Hamburg Blue Devils and again the Blue Devils had to be content to be runners-up as Bergamo Lions won 42-20. The Champions League Final between North Region 1 and South Region 7 winners took place four weeks later and again Bergamo Lions emerged thriumphant, winning 35-10 versus Stockholm Mean Machine.

About the EFAF Eurobowl and Champions League 2000

The 2000 edition of the European Federation of American Football (EFAF) Champions League and Eurobowl featured 16 teams divided into six regions for Qualification games. Two of those teams, German sides Braunschweig Lions and Hamburg Blue Devils (Eurobowl XIII 1999 Champions and Runners-Up) were given byes into the Quarter-Finals. The other two Quarter-Finalists were to be the Winners of the two Wild-Card Games between the four Regions with two teams each in the Qualification Games (Regions 2, 3, 5, 6).

There were also two Champions League regions of three teams each – Champions League North Region 1 and Champions League South Region 7, the winners of which were seeded into the Semi-Finals, and also met in the Final of a separate Competition – the EFAF Champions League 2000. The winners of the two Semi-Finals met in the EFAF Eurobowl XIV 2000. Qualification Region Groups were all to be Double Round-Robin (Home & Away – Home & Home in North American naming) and the Eurobowl Playoffs and Champions League Final were to be a single match each fixture.

Regions 4 and 8 (Atlantic Isles including Ireland; and Eastern Europe) were not represented in Eurobowl XIV 2000.
