Recap

After Tom Kelly, the intrepid American with the Irish name had set up the Central Asian American Football Association (CAAFA) in April 2002, Teams from Bishkek in Kyrgyzstan and Almaty in Kazakhstan played each other as well as American and World All-Star teams from players based in Central Asia. By 2008 Evangel University from USA had toured Central Asia playing teams from both countries and a second and third team had been set up in Bishkek.

The four-game Challenge Series in 2008 now included one game solely between two Bishkek teams (see CAAFA Bishkek Series for more details) and in Autumn 2008 a Bishkek 3-Team Tournament. The Almaty-Bishkek Challenge Series in 2008 went the Almaty KIMEP Titans way, winning all three games in the series.

Recap

In 2001 the intrepid American with the Irish name, Tom Kelly, who had attempted to set up an American Football League in the former USSR in 1979, approached the Student Relations Department of the American University of Kyrgyzstan (AUK) with regards setting up a a team. The CAAFA (Central Asian American Football Association) was thus formed in April 2002 with the formation of a team at AUK. In May 2002 the first game of American Flag Football was played at Almaty, Kazakhstan, between AUK and KIMEP from Kazakhstan. The game ended in a tie and a rematch arranged for Bishkek, in Kyrgyzstan in October 2002, which AUK won.

Thereafter Friendly games were played between Bishkek BARS and American Embassy and American Representative teams in 2003 and 2004. In 2005 more kit was brought in from USA by CAAFA President NG Shulgin from Tom Kelly, and two teams were established: KIMEP in Kazakhstan, and BIshkek BARS in Kyrgyzstan, playing Challenge Games between them for four years before a second and third team were created in Bishkek, enough for a Bishkek Tournament.

RECAP

The Central Asian American Football Association was set up in 2002 by the intrepid American with the Irish name, Tom Kelly. Having previously tried to promote American Football in the USSR in 1979, he had more success in 2002 starting teams at the American University of Kyrgyzstan (AUK) and KIMEP in Kazakhstan, two neighbouring Central Asian Republics.

Following a couple of Flag American Football games between the two teams and a few games versus Inter (International) and World teams featuring players from Turkey, Italy, Russia, USA, Canada, Afghanistan and Turkmenistan and also a game against the US Embassy in Kyrgyzstan, Tom Kelly managed to get some equipment in from America to set up two teams: Barsy Leopards, based in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, and Almaty KIMEP Titans in Kazakhstan.

In 2004, however, there was just one team: Bishkek Barsy Leopards, who played a match amongst themselves, with Leopards-1 winning out against Leopards-2 18-12. When Almaty KIMEP Titans were able to set up a team in neighbouring Kazakhstan in 2005, the two teams could play Challenge Games versus each other.

By 2007 there was also a second team in Bishkek, and so began a separate series of Challenge Games in Kyrgyzstan between the new team Golden Eagles and the Barsy Leopards.
