Dublin Dragons Logo

Report

The season started brightly for the Dragons with a 12-6 win over defending champions, Dublin Rebels, with Gavinn O’Reilly catching the games only Touchdown from QB Rob Olwill. They lost their next match to UL Vikings by a single Touchdown, Vinny O’Connell’s 3-yard run sandwiched between two Vikings TDs. In week 5, the Dragons again scored a single Touchdown, this time Ulli Zinnecker scoring, but for the second week in a row the Dragons lost as the Knights scored three TDs in reply.

The UL Vikings forfeited the return fixture due to players focusing on exams, and the long layoff before playing Carrickfergus again in Week 11 undoubtedly affected them as the steamroller that was the Carrickfergus Offense was picking up steam late in the season and put up 53 points without reply against the rusty Dragons. Week 12 was the Final Week for the Dragons and they lost 12-6 to Dublin rivals the Rebels in a game decided by the odd Interception Return in three.

1992 Match Reports

Week 1: 23 June 1992 – Antrim Bulldogs 6 Dublin Celts 0

– The Dublin Celts lost to Irish opposition for the first time in five years as they were shocked by the Antrim Bulldogs, who were now installed as favourites to win the Shamrock Bowl.[5]

Week 2: 30 June 1992 – Antrim Bulldogs 60 Lee Valley Steelers 0

– Antrim Bulldogs, with a win over the Dublin Celts under their belt, easily beat Lee Valley Steelers from Cork 60-0. Despite lots of possession for Running Back Mark Tataro and Alan Rice & John McNamara, the Steelers couldn’t convert their chances, in what was their first ever game.[6]

Week 6: 27 July 1992 – Antrim Bulldogs 50 Drogheda Vikings 0

– The Drogheda Vikings lost by a large margin in their first ever game as the Bulldogs improved to 3-0.[7]

Week 10: 23 August 1992 – Dublin Tornadoes 6 Antrim Bulldogs 0

– Quarterback Jim Walsh scored the only TD of the match as the Dublin Tornadoes secured home field advantage for the playoffs.[8]

Week 12: 6 September 1992 –Antrim Bulldogs 11 Belfast Spartans 8

– In a “cracking climax” to the regular season the Antrim Bulldogs defeated the Belfast Spartans in a close match.[9]

Playoffs: 13 September 1992 – Dublin Tornadoes 6 Antrim Bulldogs 19

– In a “dour” match, the Antrim defence held strong, with matters made worse for the Tornadoes, when QB Jim Walsh damaged his arm. Billy Beattie opened the scoring from 10 yards for the Bulldogs, and the Tornadoes responded quickly with a Mark Nicholls TD. A missed FG at the end of the first half for the Dubliners meant the teams wre level going in at the break. Antrim scored a second TD against the run of play, when Paul McCullough put the Bulldogs one TD up, and there was “no surprise” in the end when Mark Banks added athird with Garry Graham adding the extra-point.[10]

Review: The Craigavon Cowboys won the IAFL-1 Conference League Title but fell short in the IAFL-1 Bowl 18-23 to the Louth Mavericks to end the season on a disappointing note.

They won their first 6 games, often by comfortable scores, twice beating West Dublin Rhinos, and getting four wins against Leinster teams – Wexford Eagles (twice), Westmeath Minotaurs and Louth Mavericks.

Their unbeaten record, however, was lost in their 7th match, when they went down at home to Ulster rivals Donegal Derry Vipers. They gained revenge the following week in Derry, and then won the Semi-Final against Wexford Eagles in a shootout, 44-37, but were unable to repeat their regular season victory over the Louth Mavericks in the Bowl, losing 18-23.

Dublin Celts | Irish American Football Team 1993 Season Results & Roster

Dublin Celts Logo

Season Report

This was the Dublin Celts ninth year in the league and also their last. It was a difficult season for them, as they finished the regular season 5-5, their second season in a row with an even record. They lost both their regular season games against big rivals Craigavon Cowboys and also Dublin rivals the Tornadoes.

They entered the semi-final match with Craigavon as heavy underdogs but won 19-0 in one of the shocks of the season. They were unable to repeat the feat in the Shamrock Bowl, howver, losing 19-2.

This was to be their last season, as they folded soon afterwards, although a number of players went on to form the Dublin LIghtning.

Report

The Maynooth University Flag Football team has existed since 2010 when it was known as NUI Maynooth Phantoms. The highlight of the year for the first four years was the annual Tournament they hosted in the Maynooth University College grounds. In 2012-13 season, they had their greatest achievement, beating the Mullingar Minotaurs in the Turkey Bowl hosted by Dublin 86ers, and they also won a tournament at the end of the 2010-11 season, beating Dublin 86ers in the Final.

They entered the first Emerald Bowl Conference season in 2014-15, where they have had less luck, finishing with a 50% record twice, and a losing record twice. In 2019 the dropped dowm to the Glas Bowl Conference, where they reached the Final, losing to Craigavon Cowboys 2nds. It was their first winning season since the start of the Irish Flag Football League in 2014.

They were known as the NUI Maynooth Phantoms from 2010-2015, and the Maynooth University Bulls from 2015 to 2016, and since then as Maynooth University Hurricanes. The annual Maynooth Tournament, held from 2011 to 2014 was re-established in 2020, when it became an International Charity Tournament. It was also held as part of the Charity Tournament season in 2017-18.

The Vikings defence was on top in the first half as they ran out to an 18-6 lead early on. The Cycos responed with a 30-yard scoring run by Stephen Dunne, but the Vikings again went two TD’s up to lead 24-13 at the half. Drimnagh Cycos 49 Leicester Europa Eagles 6Played in Sallins, Co. Kildare. In warm non-sunny conditions, Leicester started four-and-out as the Cycos defence established themselves early on. QB Aidan Kelly topped off a long-drive on Drimnagh’s first possession with a long, winding run. Kelly found WR Liam Farrell for the one-point conversion. Although suffering a knee-injury on the play, Farrell recovered. The eagles levelled the scores with their second drive, QB Chris Wild finding Chris Broughton in the endzone. The conversion was unsuccessful, and the Cycos mainained the lead. QB Kelly found WR Farrel with two touchdown passes on the next two Cycos drives, with Kelly intercepting the Eagles in between. This made the score 19-6. The Cycos got their fourth TD with a run from Stephen Dunne. He also caught the pass for the two-point conversion, making the score 27-6. Kelly found Farrell for a hat-trick of TD passes with Dunne once again adding the two-point conversion to make the score 35-6. Reference: [6]

The Cycos defence also got on the scoreboard, when Liam Farrell returned an interception for a TD. Iain McGuinness caught the one-point conversion, making it 42-6 to Drimnagh. McGuinness got an interception of his own to set up the final Drimnagh scoring drive, as Aidan Kelly ran in another TD. On defence, Cameron Cramer and Darren Brady both sacked the Quarterback, while the Eagles got two sacks of their own. QB Aidan Kelly picked up the Cycos MVP award. Reference: [6]
