Report

During World War 2, an Ice Hockey League was staged in Belfast’s King’s Hall. For 1 season in 1940, mostly Canadian Players stationed in Belfast for the duration of the War, though with some local players, played in a four-team League, sponsored by big Industries such as Harland & Wolff Ship-Builders & Short’s & Harland Airplane Manufacturers.

The Balmoral Tigers and Harlandic Wolves dominated the proceedings, winning all games against other opposition, except the Final League match, which was a shock Raiders win over the Tigers, lifting them above the Wasps into third, and handing the League Title to the Wolves.

The top two teams all season, the Balmoral Tigers & Harlandic Wolves, then met in the Gaston Cup Final, which was won 4-2 by the Wolves after a replay.

Report

For the second season in-a-row the Dublin Spartans (10-5) beat the Dublin City Hurricanes (15-0) in the Final after the Hurricanes had won the League Pennant. It was especially bitter for the Hurricanes as they had gone through the season undefeated. The Munster Warriors (7-8) qualified for their first ever A League Playoffs, and the Belfast North Stars (4-11) joined them as the fourth team to make the postseason. Dublin Black Sox (4-11) and Greystones Mariners (2-13) narrowly missed out on the playoffs.
