IAFL 1 Bowl 2019 Logo [4]

Report

Craigavon Cowboys won the IAFL 1 Bowl at the third attempts 28-27 over the Westmeath Minotaurs. It was the Cowboys third IAFL 1 Bowl in-a-row, after losing to the Louth Mavericks in 2017 & West Dublin Rhinos in 2018. This was the Westmeath Minotaurs first ever appearance in a Bowl game.

The Cowboys had a tough start to the season, losing 2-14 to Trinity College Dublin in their opening game, before going on a 9-game winning streak to take the title. It was very close at the top of the table, with Craigavon Cowboys finishing on a 7-1 record, and Westmeath Minotaurs, Wexford Eagles and Trinity College Dublin all reaching the playoffs with 6-2 records.

The other end of the table saw Louth Mavericks, back in IAFL 1 after winning promotion to the Shamrock Bowl Conference in 2017 with their 1 Bowl victory in 2017, posting an even 4-4 record. Donegal / Derry Vipers, Galway Warriors and Waterford Wolves all struggled.

The Vipers only wins came in walkovers versus the other two teams who failed to finish the season. Waterford Wolves were back in the League after a two year absence and may have entered at a level too high for them.

The Bowl game, however, was extremely competitive, and could not have been closer with Craigavon edging it 28-27.

About

There was a Junior League for 8-14 year-olds, probably two-touch in the Leinster Area in 1987 featuring teams from Coolock-Darndale (St. Brendan’s Youth Club) as well as Sutton, Bray Seahawks (Wicklow) and a team from Co. Offaly. A picture of one player, ‘ET’ Roche (Gulls) appeared in the Sunday Tribune in 1987.

Report

The Continental Football League was created in 1965 from the merger of the United Football League and Atlantic Coast Football League as a Development League to the National Football League, with teams situated on the East Coast and in Toronto, . In 1966, the League broke away from autonomy towards a working alliance with AFL & NFL clubs, causing Commissioner Chandler to resign, as it was moving away from the original charter he signed up to. The League added a Pacific Division that year.

1967 was a difficult year for the CoFL as a number of teams failed to finish the season, although the League became more “Continental” by merging with Professional Football League of America, thus bringing in teams from the Centre. In 1969 the League absorbed the Texas Professional Football League, and looked to become the largest Football League in the country, as it bid for University of Southern California star, O. J. Simpson. the newly merged NFL-AFL began opening their pockets in 1970 and the Continental Football League fell apart as backers pulled out.

Tom Furlong

Born: Daingean, Co. offaly

Career: Kicker on the Practice Squad of the New York Giants (NFL) 1965 / Pre-Season signing for Atlanta Falcons (NFL) 1966 (Cut after tearing cruciate ligaments) / Brooklyn Dodgers, Continental Football League 1966.

Biography: Tom Furlong was born in Daingean, Co. Offaly, and played Inter-County Football for Offaly, before being banned by the County Board for playing Soccer. Sitting in a bar in New York, he overheard members of the New York Giants Coaching Staff lamenting at the quality of their kickers (The Giants were having a woeful season) and having seen the game on TV, thought there was nothing to it a GAA player could not do, and volunteered to try out. He got on the Practice Squad for the Giants in 1965, leading to interviews with the New York Times and other newspapers with Irish-American connections.

The Giants brought in a new Kicker the following season, but the Irish-American Community Leaders, seeing the value of an Irish-born player in the NFL, arranged tryouts with the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots. He was signed by the Falcons for $12, 000-a-yeat contract, but unfortunately tore his cruciate ligament in training four days before the start of the season.

He didn’t give up on a Pro Career, however, as he was only working as a carpet fitter at the time and signed for the Brookyn Dodgers in the Continental Football League, where he played the 1966 season before retiring, as he thought his kicking was never as good after the injury.

Report

USA won their second World Cup title in their second appearance, with an easy 50-7 victory over Canada. Both had won their groups comfortably, although Canada had a scare against Japan, winning by the slender margin of 31-27.

Japan again showed they were the third best Nation in the American Football World by squeaking by Mexico 17-14 in the third place playoff. Germany again proved to be the top European Nation, defeating France 21-17 for fifth, while hosts Austria, in their first World Cup, sent the home fans out on a high by taking seventh, 48-10 over Australia.

About

FAMA played its first 11-on-11 season in 2014 after playing 8-on-8 Arena Football since 2009. It was the Premier Professional League in Mexico during this time.

Report

The 2014 season featured five teams in Mexico City (CDMX – Ciudad Mexico), and one in Guadalajara (Mexicas – the name the Aztecs called themselves). Tigres Oro SPP beat the previously undefeated Olmecas Premier 14-9 in the Gran Final.

In 2015 Osos (Bears) University side, Centinelas and Redskins Master were added, replacing Guerreros (Warriors), Cougars, Dragones Rojo (Red Dragons) and Olmecas Premier (Olmecas were an ancient people in Mexico). Tigres Oro won their second in a row beating Osos U in the Gran Final.

For 2016, teams were put in Azcapotzalco (Hormigas – Angry Ants) and Tampico (Lagartos – Lizards), replacing Redskins and Centinelas. Lagartos Tampico defeated Tigres Oro (Gold Tigers) 28-0 in the Gran Final, thus depriving them of the 3-in-a-row.
