Report

Florida Gators won the 1996 Division 1A NCAA Football title with a defeat of rivals Florida State Seminoles in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans. Ohio State Buckeyes won the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, defeating Arizona State Sun Devils to take second place in the end-of-season polls.

Unlike most other College Sports in the National Collegiate Athletic Association there was no National Bowl Game at the end of season, but a series of four Big Bowl Games in each quarter of the country for the Champions of the Top Conferences, with an end-of-season poll by the Nations Top Sport Journalists determining who wins the National Championship.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Irish Roman Catholic College in South Bend, Indiana, near Chicago, finished in 12th place in legendary College Football Coach, Lou Holtz’s last season in charge. The Fighting Irish were not satisfied with the cost/payout relationship in the lesser bowls at the end of the season, and despite numerous invites to Bowl Games, did not take part in any, casting a lull over Holtz’s last year in charge.

Report

the First American Football Verband Deutschland German Bowl was played in 1979 and won on the first two occasions by Frankfurter Löwen (Wolves), with Anzbach Grizzlies winning the next two. Düsseldorf Panther won in 1983, 1984 and 1986 with Anzbach winning their third in the intervening year. Berlin Adler (Eagles) won four German Bowls in five years from 1987 to 1991, with Red Barons Cologne winning the one in between in 1988.Düsseldorf Panther again won three Bowls in four years from 1992 to 1995 with Munich Cowboys taking the honours in 1993.

In 1996 a new era of American Football began with Hamburg Blue Devils triumphing for the first time. Braunscweig Lionswon three in a row from 1997 to 1999 and then in the new Millenium, Cologne Crocodiles were another team to etch their name on the Champions list for the first time. Hamburg Blue Devils then got back on the winners roll, winning three in a row from 2001 to 2003, before Berlin Adler won in 2004. From 2005 to 2008 Braunschweig Lions again went on a winning run, and Berlin Adler got their third German Bowl victory in 2009.

There was another change in the guard in 2010, with Kiel Baltic Hurricanes victorious, and then Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns from 2011 to 2012 and 2017 to 2018, with Braunschweig NewYorker Lions triumphing in the four years in between.

Report

The Dublin Celts were American Football Ireland’s first official team, founded in 1984, after an advertisement was placed in the Evening Herald [Reference: 2]. About two dozen Regulars met at the Phoenix Park in Dublin for an American Football practice session and a short game [Reference: 1], presumably wearing their two different shirt colours: Green and White.

The game was new to Ireland following the influence of the UK’s Channel 4 Sunday evening programmes showing games from the United States of America. The Irish Times of 16th March 1985 reported there were apparently the start of teams in Coleraine, Co. Derry; and Blanchardstown, Foxrock and University College Dublin, all Co. Dublin.
