Hibernia Basketball is a representative team of Elite Players from the Men’s National League which competed in the FIBA Europa Cup 2015-16. Hibernia lost all six matches. Lehmon Colbert Jr, an American National, scored 13.3 Points Per Game and got 5.3 Rebounds Per Game, the highest of any Hibernia player. Kyle Hosford, from Cork, managed a team-high 2.6 Assists Per Game.

The Kerry Area Basketball Board Men’s Cross Division was a round-robin series of Division 2 versus Division 3 matches. St. Mary’s from Castleisland came out on top, with a 4-0 Wins-Losses Record, with Division 3 teams St. Josephs from Duagh and Glenbeigh both going 2-1 after losing to St. Mary’s and triumphing over both the other two Division 2 teams.

In terms of an Overall Division 2 / Division 3 Standings, St. Mary’s Castleisland finished with the best record in Division 2 and also Overall with an 8-0 record. St. Josephs Duagh were the best Division 3 team with an 8-1 Overall Record.

Ireland has won 16 Medals in Boxing in the Olympic Games, by far our most Successful sport. Michael Carruth (Barcelona 1992) and Katie Taylor (London 2012) have won both Gold, while our best medal hauls ever were London 2012 (four medals) and Melbourne 1956 (four medals). John McNally was Ireland’s first ever Boxing Medal Winner, winning Silver at Helsinki 1952.

Report

Underdogs London Capitals shocked the Tiger Bay warriors, from Cardiff in Wales in the JGL Junior Bowl in 1993. the Junior Gridiron League Junior League was a Two Touch League for 9-14 year olds in the South of Britain. Two Touch was a variation on Flag Football whereby the ball carrier was tackled by placing two hands on him or her.

The Tiger Bay Warriors had finished top of the League with a 6-0 Wins-Losses record, and the Capitals had squeaked into the they had finished level with Northants Storm on 3-3. Kent Panthers were the other team in the league.

The Final itself was close, with a scoreless first quarter before the Capitals MVP Adam Seoudy completed an 80-yard touchdown drive with a TD pass to Wide Receiver John Buckett. Tiger Bay, however, drew level on MVP Jamie Roberts’ touchdown reception.

The Capitals had the last say, with a safety (worth two points) to wrap up the title.

Report

The Irish Fantasy League of American Football started in 1994 with five teams: Crumlin Red Giants (Champions 1994), Maltese Mastodons, Wicklow Wolves, Castleknock Cougars and Leitrim Cruisers. Corrigeen Crusaders and South Central Stingrays joined in 1995, but the winners that year and in 1996 were Wicklow Wolves. The only change in 1996 was a move for the Maltese Mastodons to Mornington.

1997 saw another expansion team: Casement Cheetahs. this year the new, match-up league system was introduced, with two Conferences, Lombardi and Madden introduced, with teams placed in one or the other depending on where they finished the previous year. Promotion and Relegation was also introduced. (For the IFLAF 1997-2005 see: Irish Fantasy League of American Football 1997-2005 and for IFLAF 2006-2015 Irish Fantasy League of American Football 2006-2015 ). The League folded in 2015 after all of the original franchises had left.

NDMA (British Level 1) sides Milton Keynes Pioneers and Northants Storm met in an American Football friendly over Winter 1993, with the Storm winning by one converted touchdown.

The same week, in a Charity match in aid of the baby care unit at John Ratcliffe Hospital, Oxford, the USAF Upper Heyford Skykings overcame an Oxford Saints All-Star team 33-8.

Report

After three International matches between Italy and Germany (even though the Berlin Wall was years from falling down the team referred to itself as Germany, although all players and clubs were from West Germany), a first European Championship was played in Vince Lombardi Stadium, Castelgiorgio, Italy.

Featuring five countries, Italy beat Finland 18-6 in the Final, with West Germany defeating France 27-20 in the 3rd Place match and Austria finishing fifth. (As this was an official tournament Germany played as West Germany).
