Report

Five Irish Soccer played in Major League Soccer in 2013: Robbie Keane starred in 25 games, scoring 16 goals for Los Angeles Galaxy, Jonny Steele (Northern Ireland) played in 24 games, scoring 5 goals for New York Red Bulls, Darren O’Dea scored one goal in 17 games for Toronto FC, Andy O’Brien played in 16 games for Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and finally Peter McGlynn, was on the San Jose Earthquakes squad.

In Addition, Gloucester Celtic of Ottawa won the Canadian National Cup – the Canadian Challenge Trophy Final, the team with an Irish name defeating Surrey United Firefighters 3-0 in the Final.

In Mexico’s Liga MX, Atlante Cancun finished 17th of 18 in both the Apertura and Clasura Championships (Opening and Closing Championships). Atlante Cancun are named after the Atlantic Ocean, which is in itself named after Atlantis, what some archeologists believe may be the Tin Mining Regions of Ireland and Cornwall, known to the ancient Greeks. The name Atlantic Isles is also used instead of the British Isles. [Reference: 6-7].

Note: In Central and South American Soccer Championships, the season is divided into Apertura and Clasura (Opening and Closing Champiobships), with two separate Champions for the two halves of the season, decided by playoffs as in North American Sports. As with all North American Sports, Major League Soccer is divided geographically into Conferences, with playoffs determining the overall Champions.

Belfast Blitzers 24 Dublin Celts 20 – Belfast Blitzers became the first Irish team to ever defeat the Dublin Celts when Martin Press ran in from closerange in the dying minutes to snatch victory at Cooke Rugby Club. The Match was the second leg of the Capital Cup, which was won on aggregate by the Celts after their 46-7 win earlier in the season, however, the Blitzers were overjoyed with their achievement. The Celts took the lead with an early touchdown, but the Blitzers hit back with touchdown from wide receiver Ivan Smith, which was converted to give them a 7-6 lead. Derek McCord turned the match in Belfast’s favour with an 85-yard Punt return, with extra point again good, to put the Blitzers 14-6 up. The Celts hit back with two touchdowns to go 20-16 up but the Belfast defense held on for seven minutes before Press scored the decisive Touchdown. [Reference: 15]

Report

The Blitzers won the IAFA Championship on points difference from the Dublin Celts as they both finished on the same record. They also won the NIAFA Championship, which included all matches played except the ones against the Dublin Celts.

At the end of the season there was a separate Shamrock Bowl arranged, which was by invite. The Dublin Celts & Belfast Blitzers were both invited but the Blitzers as both League & Cup Champions declined to take part as they considered themselves already champions. The Craigavon Cowboys took their place and beat the Celts 6-2, with a late Nigel Trimble Touchdown run.

About

There were two separate Leagues in 1986: The Northern Ireland American Football Association, where each of the Northern teams played each other twice. Belfast Blitzers won all of their matches. There was also an Irish American Football Association where each of the NIAFA games counted as well as a Home & Away series for each NIAFA team with the Dublin Celts. The NIAFA League was a League on paper only, though there were medals awarded to the winning Belfast Blitzers team.
