A new scheme, Options Unlimited, was launched in the Ballybrack and Loughlinstown areas of South Co. It was Co-Ordinated by Kelvin Troy, who played the 1985-86 season as a Professional American Import for Premier Milk Toppers Killester in the Irish Basketball Association Men’s National League. There were two teams in the main match – the GOAL Heroes (GOAL is an Irish International Development Organisation) and the RTE Heroes (RTE – Radio Teilifis Eireann – is the Irish National Broadcaster). It was played in aid of Charity for Developing Countries. There was also a Women’s match.

In 1989 RTE and Goal Stars tied the match 3-3.

Report

The idea for American 7s came to Ryan DePaul late in 2002. His High School Football playing career was over and there was no possibility of playing College Football. He was playing pick-up, no pads or helmet football in parks and thought it needed codifying, so in 2005 he began to develop 7v7 No Pads, No Helmet, Tackle American Football.

In 2014 he was approached by lifelong friend and entrepreneur, Sener Korkusuz about launching the League to Major League level. Soon afterwards the American 7s Football League was born, starting its first season in March 2015.

The 2015 season was covered in Regional Press in Maryland and well as National and International Websites, with the 2015 Champion being Paterson New Jersey U. The 2016 Champions was Trenton New Jersey Brothers in Christ (New Jersey BIC), and in 2017 Union City (New Jersey) Chiefs won the Championship, which was a milestone for the league as it was televised on ELEVEN Sports Network in 70 Million households in the USA and 8 countries Worldwide.

In 2018 the League was won by Baltimore Gators, 28-14 over Baltimore Vikings, and in 2019, PA Immortalz won the Championship, defeating NJ Paterson U 26-19. For the 2020 Season the League added a West Coast Division with teams in Long Beach, Riverside and San diego, but was cancelled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. Investors included former NFL Player and household name, Deion “Prime Time” Sanders. [Ref: 4-5]

Season Report

The Preseason went well for the East Side Jets first ever season, winning 6-0 against Aldergrove Hawks, and then 7-2 against Bangor Buccaneers in their home debut with a fourth quarter touchdown from Mark Dunwoody.

In their first Regular Season game, however, they came up against IAFA Champions from 1986, the Belfast Blitzer, who ran up the score 92-0, and the in their second week they were overwhelmed 58-0 by Shamrock Bowl Champions the previous year, Craigavon Cowboys.

The Jets never recovered after that, and the 9 points they scored against the Belfast Blitzers were to be the only ones they would score all season. They folded after 6 of 10 games, although a match against the Jordanstown Jaguars was overturned in their favour after the Jaguars also pulled out.

Report

Futbol Americano Mexico (FAM) was started in 2018, playing its first season in 2019, as a rival to the Liga Futbol Americano Profesional (LFA) in Mexico. It was the first league other than the NFL to play by NFL rules, with the exception of overtime, which is by NCAA rules. All other leagues outside of America, bar the Canadian Football League (which has its own rules) are played under NCAA rules. [Ref: 4]

The 2020 League was suspended after the games on 14 March due to the COVID-19 Coronavirus Pandemic. Tequileros de Jalisco (3-1) and Bulldogs de Naucalpan (2-1) were out in front in the Division Voit. In Division BWW, Caudillos de Chuihuahua were clear leaders on a 4-0 Won-Loss Record.

World Series of Football 1903 [Ref: 1-2]

Report

The second World Series of Football, again scheduled for Madison Square Garden, under the stewardship of Irish-American Tom O’Rourke, pitted the Upstate New York team, Watertown Red and Blacks, who claimed for the third year in a row to be “World Champions” against the Frankin Athletic Club of Pennsylvania, the Oreos Athletic Club of Asbury Park, New Jersey and Orange Athletic Club, also of New Jersey. Also on the bill were Gaelic Football matches and what was billed as the New York City Championship, and a High School All-Star Game.

Franklin AC had won 10 matches in their informal Pennsylvania Professional Circuit, having had paid £20,000 to buy up the best players the Phillies and the Athletics of Philadelphia and the Stars of Pittsburgh had to offer. This was in response to Oil City having done the same in a previous match and humiliated the Franklin team. The two teams were based in the booming Oil County of Franklin in Pennsylvania, then the Oil Capital of America. Franklin scored 438 points in this run, with zero conceded, and claimed to be Professional Football Champions of the World.

In Upstate New York, the defending World Series Champions, Syracuse AC, declined to defend their title. This was similar to the Watertown Red and Blacks of the previous year, the best team in Upstate New York, and one of four powers in Professional Football, who had declined to put their claim to World Champions on the line. Syracuse had beaten Watertown in two games previously in 1903, and Franklin and seen off Syracuse 12-0 during their run, the only game that was not totally one sided. Despite not having a legitimate clai to be Upstate New York Champions, never mind World Champions, the Watertown team jumped at the chance to take part, perhaps stung by criticism the previous year.

In the run-up to the games, Olympic Athletic Club saw off two teams to win the New York City title, and Fort Hamilton and Fort Totten battled to a 0-0 tie in the Championship of New York Harbour. The novelty had worn off for New Yorkers and the biggest draw of the Series was for the New York High School All-Star game.

The first Semi-Final was won by Watertown, 5-0, in a tougher than expected match with Oreos AC, and second went Franklin’s way, again the unfancied New Jersey team putting up a better game than expected, with Franklin winning 12-0 against Orange AC. the Final itself, was won by Franklin with a two touchdown victory over Watertown.

The Series was a disappointment at the box-office and didn’t return for a third year, however, it is with some justification the first attempt at a National Championship Series in Football, albeit on a 70-yard Indoor Field. The focus for Professional Football had already shifted in 1903 to the Ohio League circuit, which until the founding of the American Professional Football Association (now National Football League) in 1920, was the most lucrative, and with some justification, the best league in the country, although matches with both the Pennsylvania and Upstate New York Circuits were keen and competitive.
