Report

1991 was the eighth season of organised Gridiron Football in Britain featuring British-based teams and British-born players. It was also the second season of the NDMA, and the Coke Bowl, after Budweiser pulled sponsorship for the Budweiser League and Coca-Cola replaced them.

Birmingham Bulls won their third BritBowl, as the Bowl Games were unofficially known, by defeating London Olympians for the second time in four years in the Finale by a single point, 39-38. The Bulls had also previously defeated Glasgow Lions 23-2 in Summer Bowl II (1986) and lost to Manchester Spartans 21-14 in Bud Bowl IV (1989).

For the Olympians it was a heart-breaking fourth loss in four Bowl appearances, having lost twice to the London Ravens (45-7 in Summer Bowl I in 1985 and 20-12 in Bud Bowl I in 1986) as well as the previous 30-6 defeat to the Bulls in Brit Bowl III in 1988.

Defending Champions Manchester Spartans failed to make it three titles in a row as they slumped to a 2-8 record. 1990’s runners-up Northants Storm finished the season 8-2 but lost out in the Semi-Finals by 34-12 to the Olympians.

In all it was a disappointing season despite the close end to the Bowl Game, as a number of long-term top Britball teams disbanded after the season: London Ravens, champions and undefeated 1984 to 1987, folded after a dismal 2-7-1 record by their standards, and Bristol Packers and Bournemouth Bobcat both disbanded leaving no team in top Division in the South West for 1992.

The NDMA created a new Super League for 1992 featuring the top 12 teams from 1991, with another 12 teams making up the second level. For the Olympians, despite defeat again, it was to be the start of a new era of dominance, as the Streatham-based team emerged from the Ravens’ shadow to dominate British Gridiron Football for the next 15 years.

Unsure of his own ability he asked John Carney, who has 23 years of experience kicking Footballs and Carney said he could mix it with the NFL players. Before long Leader found himself playing for the Aviators in The Spring League in USA. The Aviators, one of four teams based in Indianapolis, a COVID-19 Pod and one of two Pods in the 8-team league in 2021 finished with an 0-6 record in 2021. [References: 60 – see end of article]

NFL Super Bowl (AFC Champions v NFC Champions) 1991

NFL Report

Buffalo Bills, holding the best record in the AFC (13-3) lost their second Super Bowl in succession, defeated 37-24 by Washington Redskins, holders of the best record in the NFC and entire NFL (14-2). For the AFC it was an eighth successive loss in the biggest event in USA sports. The last time an AFC team won the Super Bowl was Los Angeles Raiders’ 38-9 victory over Washington Redskins on 22 January 1984 at Tampa, Florida in Super Bowl XVIII. Following a scoreless first quarter the Redskins scored 17 points in the second quarter and added a second John Riggs run touchdown 16 seconds into the third quarter to take a commanding 24-0 lead. Buffalo hit back later in the third quarter with a field goal and touchdown to reduce the deficit to 14 points, but another Redskins touchdown before the end of the quarter made the score 31-10. Two more field goals by Lohmiller made the score 37-10 in the fourth quarter. The Bills scored two passing touchdowns late in the game to make the score 37-24 at the final whistle. WLAF Report

The National Football League established the World League of American Football (WLAF) to further promote the sport around the World. Beginning in 1991 with ten teams the WLAF was divided into three divisions: European (with teams in London, England, UK; Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain; and Frankfurt, Hesse, Germany); North American East Division (three teams in USA: New York/New Jersey Knights, NJ; Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks, NC; and Orlando Thunder, FL; plus one team in Quebec, Canada: Montreal Machine) and North American West Division (Three teams in USA: Birmingham Fire, AL; San Antonio Riders, TX; and Sacramento Surge, CA). An imbalance in players allocated by the NFL for development in the WLAF meant no team in the European Division finished with a losing record, and no team in either North American Division finished with a winning record. World Bowl ’91 was won by London Monarchs by 21-0 versus Barcelona Dragons at the hallowed grounds of Wembley Stadium, the home of England’s National Soccer Team. Following the 1991 season the winless Raleigh-Durham Skyhawks were replaced by Ohio Glory in Columbus for 1992. [WLAF References: 1-4]

AAF Report

A new Football power emerged on the scene in 1991: The USSR. Following glasnost the USSR opened up to American Football and a six-team league was established with teams in Moscow (Bruins and Swans), Caspian Sea Region (Sphinxes), Ukraine (Donetsk Scythians and Kharkov Atlantis) and Belarus (Minsk Zubrs – ‘Bison’). The first and only official Championship of USSR ended with a Moscow Bruins victory over Moscow Swans. After the season the USSR broke up, with Moscow Bears (Bruins) and Krasnoyarsk Siberian Devils competing for Championship of Russia. Kharkov Atlantis and Donetsk Scythians joined newly independent Ukraine’s Football Association and Minsk Zubrs joined Belarus’ Football Association. [AAF USSR References 1-2]

ELF 2023 Season Recap

American Football

Week 1 (3-4 June 2023)

There were big losses for two of the European League of Football’s new teams: Fehérvar Enthroners from Hungary lost 36-3 at home to Berlin Thunder of Germany and Munich Ravens from Bavaria were defeated 59-38, also at home, to Raiders Tirol of Austria. Paris Musketeers of France, however, bucked the trend with a 24-17 victory at Cologne Centurions from the largest city in Nord Rhein-Westphalia. Panthers Wroclaw of Poland also defeated a German team, winning 34-25 at home to Hamburg Sea Devils. Leipzig Kings of Saxony (Sachsen) were able to overcome the Panthers Slavic brethren, Prague Lions 18-15 in the Czech Republic. Meanwhile on the Mediterranean Coast, Barcelona Dragons triumphed 29-17 versus Helvetic Guards of Zurich, Switzerland. The most impressive win of the weekend, however, was Rhein Fire’s 33-9 defeat of Frankfurt Galaxy. Rhein Fire, of Dusseldorf, the capital city of Nord Rhein-Westphalia are fierce rivals of Cologne Centurions, and are one of the National Football League Europe League teams to return in the European League of Football, along with Frankfurt Galaxy of Hesse; Cologne Centurions, Hamburg Galaxy, Berlin Thunder and Catalonia’s Barcelona Dragons.

Week 6 (7-9 July 2023)

The three division leaders, Vienna Vikings in the Eastern Conference; Stuttgart Surge in the Central Conference; and Rhein Fire in the Western Conference remained undefeated. Vikings (5-0) had a tremendous 34-13 victory over Austrian rivals Raiders Tirol (4-2). Rhein Fire had (6-0) a closer game with Munich Ravens (2-3) but still had too much and eventually won 39-25. Stuttgart Surge (5-0) meanwhile continued their best season ever with a narrow 14-6 victory over Paris Musketeers (2-4).

The league itself was dealt a blow by the bankruptcy of Leipzig Kings (2-4) who forfeited their game with Prague Lions (1-4). Continuing a good week on the field for Germanic teams, Frankfurt Galaxy (4-1) squeaked by Milano Seamen (1-4) 40-33; Helvetic Guards (1-5) won by a field goal, 22-19, versus Barcelona Dragons (2-3) ; Hamburg Sea Devils (3-3) defeated Panthers Wrocław (4-2) 17-10 to keep alive their hopes of a third ELF Championship Game appearance in a row; and Berlin Thunder (4-2) trounced Hungarian team, the Fehérvar Enthroners (0-6) 60-6. About the European League of Football

– Photo by Jean Daniel Francouer on Pexels.com

American Football

In some ways a resurrection of the old National Football League sponsored World League of American Football / National Football League Europe League, the European League of Football is the latest top-level Professional American Football League spanning the continent of Europe. The League resurrected many of the old WLAF and NFLE team names, such as Barcelona Dragons (Catalonia), Frankfurt Galaxy, Berlin Thunder, Hamburg Sea Devils, Rhein Fire and Cologne Centurions, as well as adding new teams Stuttgart Surge and Leipzig Kings (all Germany), and promoting European National League and previously members of other smaller European Professional Leagues, Raiders Tirol and Vienna Vikings (both Austria), Istanbul Rams (Turkey), and Panthers Wroclaw (Poland). For 2023 Istanbul Rams were replaced by Prague Lions (Czech Republic), Helvetic Guards (Switzerland), Paris Musketeers (France), Milano Seamen (Italy) and Fehérvar Enthroners (Hungary).

About American Gridiron Football

– Photo by Ricardo CL on Pexels.com

American Football is a North American version of Football, dating back over 100 years and resembling Rugby more than Soccer but played with 11 players on each team on the field at any one time (as in Soccer rather than Rugby). There is unlimited substitution in the Stateside-version of the game and Offense (Attack) and Defense have two entirely separate squads within each team – when the attacking teams’ Offense is on the field the opposing teams Defense is also on the field and vice-versa.

Scoring is by primarily by running or passing the ball into the opposing teams’ Endzone (a 15-yard area at either end of the 100-yard field) to score a Touchdown – worth 7 points – although despite the name and unlike in Rugby when scoring a Try this does not have to be touched down for the score to count – the ball just has to pass the ‘plane’ of the Endzone cleanly – in other words with the scoring players both feet in bounds and in clear possession of the ball). A TD is converted by the choice of either kicking the ball through the uprights (posts) for 1 point or by passing or running it successfully into the endzone for 2 points (this is in addition to the 6 points for the Touchdown (TD).

If a Touchdown appears unlikely during the attacking teams’ ‘Drive’ they can opt to kick a Field Goal worth 3 points. A ‘Drive’ is the cumulated plays of a teams’ single possession, and ends with either a score or a turnover – a change of possession such a pass being intercepted or the ball being ‘fumbled’ (dropped) and being recovered by the opposition. If a team is not within scoring range it may opt to ‘punt’ the ball – kick it back into the opposing teams’ end to gain better field position – and in doing so handing possession back to the opposition.

A third way of scoring is by a Safety – usually a defensive score whereby the ball carrier is tackled in his own Endzone. A Safety is Worth 2 Points.

Each game is 60 minutes long – divided into 4 quarters of 15 minutes – although unlike Rugby, Soccer or GAA there is no running clock, with the clock being stopped every time the ball is ‘dead’ – in other words goes out of the playing area or in other cases such as a score, incomplete pass or change of possession. Each game thus lasts up to 3 hours 30 minutes or sometimes more.

The National Football League (NFL) in USA is the Major Professional League and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Football programmes are also very big in USA.

About the NAFL North American Football League 1988

Charlie Finley, the former Oakland A’s Major League Baseball owner, after the failed attempt to start up the International Baseball League with Donald Trump in 1981/1982, announced plans in 1987 for a NAFL – North American Football League, which would begin play in 1988, and would be a merger of the CFL – Canadian Football League – with 9 new teams based in USA: Birmingham, New York, Chicago, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Memphis, Phoenix, Jacksonville and Dallas-Fort Worth. The league would be based in Birmingham, but never got off the ground. The NAFL merger of CFL and USA teams would have had a Championship Game pitting the winners of the CFL versus the winners of the US League and would have had an inter-locking schedule. The Canadian Football League dismissed the merger talks, but did not rule it out altogether, saying anything is possible for the right amount of money. [References: 1]

Weeks 3-4 (31 April-9 April 2023)

After four weeks the Frisco Fighters of Texas (3-0), Massachusetts Pirates (2-0) and Tucson Sugar Skulls of Arizona (2-0) were the only undefeated teams in the IFL. Frisco had improved to 3-0 in week 3 with a close 60-55 victory at Duke City Gladiators from Albuquerque, New Mexico. Massachusetts Pirates kept pace with the Fighters in the Eastern Conference with a 59-52 defeat of Bay Area Panthers from San Jose, California in the Pirates home in New England, while Tucson Sugar Skulls picked up wins in their first two outings: 35-16 at San Diego Strike Force in a low-scoring game for Indoor rules in week 3, and a 54-48 win at Arizona Rattlers in an Arizona rivalry game.

The Eastern Conference’s Green Bay Blizzard and Sioux Falls Storm both picked up their first wins of the season in victories over Iowa Barnstormers: the Wisconsin-based Blizzard winning 44-25 at home in week 3 and the South Dakota-based Storm 54-24 at home in week 4. Other teams picking up first wins were Northern Arizona Wranglers (48-42 versus Vegas Knight Hawks), San Diego Strike Force (37-36 at Vegas Knight Hawks) and Duke City Gladiators (57-36 at home to league newcomers Tulsa Oilers). ABOUT THE IFL 2022

For the 2023 season the Indoor Football League lost the Bismarck Bucks but added the Tulsa Oilers to remain a 14-team league, divided into two Conferences (East and West) of seven teams each. Northern Arizona Wranglers are the defending Champions.

The Indoor Football League is a Major American Football League playing Reduced Numbers (8v8) Arena Indoor American Football in USA. Previously AAA, it has since the demise of the Arena Football League (a Major League) after the 2019 season, expanded its Geographic Reach, and has taken the AFL’s position as the Major League in Indoor/Arena Football. This version of American Football is most popular in Mexico, hence names like Tucson Sugar Skulls. LEXFA (Liga Extrema de Futbol Arena) in Mexico is the Major League in Mexico (and also one of four Mexican Majors)

Season Recap

Regular Season Recap

University of Limerick Vikings made a statement about returning to the Premier Division by winning all eight regular season games, including a crucial 12-6 victory at Louth Mavericks, previously also undefeated. Mavericks, another once-Premier team had the edge in points scored-points allowed: 292-43 to 205-50 during the regular season, and a probable meet-up in the Division 1 Bowl was anticipated. Cill Dara Crusaders finished third on 5-3, with all losses coming versus the top two teams: twice against UL Vikings (6-23 on March 19 and 0-19 on June 18), and once versus Louth Mavericks (0-34 on April 30).

The bottom half of the table featured three Ulster teams and West Dublin Rhinos, who finished in fourth on 3-5, thanks to a final weekend 28-0 victory at Donegal / Derry Vipers. The Vipers finished 2-6 below the NI Razorbacks of Castlereagh, who finished 3-5 like the Rhinos but had lost 0-24 to the West Dublin outfit on April 2. Antrim Jets finished 0-8, though managed to score versus both Razorbacks and Crusaders. [References: S-1]
