Dublin Dragons Logo

IAFL 8-a-side Senior Team 2002-2003; 2008-2009

Home Ground: Lucan Community College

Colours: Burgundy & Gold

History: One of the original teams in the reformed IAFL in 2001, having their roots in the Dublin Gladiators Flag Football Team, the Dragons always struggled in the shadows of their illustrious neighbours, the Dublin Rebels.

They dropped down to the 8-a-side Division 1 in 2002-03 and again the DV8 Development League in 2008 in order to rebuild, returning to full 11-man IAFL in 2004 & 2010.

They were plagued throughout their history by internal divisions, and in 2015 reformed as the South Dublin Panthers.

Report

The XFL continued to play behind closed doors through the coronavirus outbreak, which stopped a lot of sports leagues. It finally shut up shop on March 12 after a Seattle Dragons player had tested positive for coronavirus, after the game with Houston Roughnecks on March 7. This player had also participated in the February 29th game against St. Louis Battlehawks, and so all players and teams were alerted and the league stopped. A decision was made by Oliver Luck, XFL Commissioner to cancel the rest of the season. [Ref: 4-5]

At the time there was a three-way tie at the top of the Eastern Division, with DC Defenders, St. Louis Battlehawks and New York Guardians all on 3-2. In the West, Houston Roughnecks (5-0) had a clear lead over the teams in joint second, Dallas Renegades and Los Angeles Wildcats (both 2-3). It also did better than the Alliance of American Football in drawing fans to a AAA Football League. The XFL averaged about 18,600 fans a game, whereas its predecessor, the AAF averaged about 15,000 during its one season in 2019. [Ref: 7]

About

The XFL 2020 is the second incarnation of Vince McMahon’s rival Pro Football League to the National Football League and Canadian Football League.

He started the original XFL in 2001 after being refused a license for a CFL team, and sought to bring Football back to its Hard-Working Class roots. At the time the NFL was starting to cut down on touchdown celebrations and bring in more laws protecting the quarterback, and was called the “No Fun League” by its detractors. Vince McMahon named all of the teams in the original XFL after criminals or extreme mental illnesses, and brought in hard-hitting rules, that aimed to bring the hard-nosed element among the working classes back into the game, by making it more like the Football of a century previously.

The original XFL, however, failed to bring in an audience, as it was seen as deviating too much from the standard rules of football. [Ref: 7]

This version of the XFL promises closer rules to the NFL, and has still used extreme names, just not criminal, or mentally ill.

While it positions itself as a Major League rival to the NFL & CFL, it can be thought of as more of a AAA Football League.

Report

On a bright evening in Ostend, the Belgian Barbarians were hoping to gain revenge for defeat to Ireland by 20-19 a year previously.

Ireland received the ball to start the game with aggresive running from RB Jonathan Siri unfortunately undone by offensive errors. Irish wolfhounds punter Tom Donovan pinned the Belgian offense deep in their own territory, however, they sprung loose on an 80 Touchdown pass from QB Tomasz Firszt to Eric-Junior Hiernaux to open the scoring. Wolfhounds Linebacker Spencer McDowell blocked the extra point kick, however, to leave the score 6-0 to Belgium.

Pentalties and mental mistakes proved costly in a slow quarter for the the Wolfhounds, with injuries to starters LT John McDonald & Wide Receiver Sean McGoldrick, meaning replacements had little time to get up to speed.

Irish Wolfhounds continued with a heavy running game, but penalties continued to marr any offensive territory gained.Tom Donovan continued to give the Irish great field position with some big punts.

The Irish defense continued to shut down the Belgian offense, which persisted with a option run and screen pass plays. A long Irish Wolfhounds pass to WR Jahn Dasini was called back for holding at the line of scrimmage. The halftimde score remained 6-0.

Irish fortunes picked up in the third quarter, as another screen pass from the Belgians, was read perfectly by Irish Defensive Tackle Paddy Sweeney and intercepted, returning it 10 yards to the Belgian 25 yard line.

McMahon and Siri combined with strong runs to bring the ball to the 5 yard line, with a 4th Down and 1 yard to go scenario seeing Siri not only get the first down, but also run in for a Touchdown, with some great blocking by Center Dave Shaw and Right Guard Hassan Jaafar. Marty Caskey slotted the extra point to put Ireland 7-6 up.

The rest of the third quarter saw the offensive stalemate of the first half continue. with fresh legs in Ben Arulogun & Chris Carson, the Irish found gaps in a tiring Belgian line, but the drive ended at the Belgian 20 yard line.

The Belgians were forced to try deep passes downfield and one was intercepted by Free Safety Alex Kusmirek, giving the Irish a chance to finish the game off, taking over on the 20 yard line of the Belgians.

The Irish needed one first down to close out the game but unfortunately came up short and Belgium took over with 90 seconds left. The Belgians managed two first downs, causing hearts to miss a beat in the Irish camp, but Spencer McDowell managed to force QB Firszt into a deep pass into the endzone on a blitz, which was chop blocked by the Belgian RB, with the resulting penalty putting Belgium out of Hail Mary range.

The subsequent play saw a Belgian WR tackled in-bounds on a 10 yard screen pass, and time expired, giving the Irish Wolfhounds a 7-6 victory.
